Commented in These Pluto Truthers Insist NASA Images Are Fake
We're talking about the same kind of people who attach "Gate" to any scandal out there involving politicians.
Specially on a Gawker Media owned blog.

Commented in These Pluto Truthers Insist NASA Images Are Fake
Two truthers are on a plane en route to a truther conference. On the way, the plane crashes and they die.
They get to heaven and are greeted by God himself.
One of them asks "I have to ask, what is the truth behind the 9/11 attacks?". God answers "Bin Ladden funded a terrorist group that hijacked planes they flew into the twin towers."
The guy turns towards his friend and says "This goes higher than we thought!"

Commented in Obese men have just a '1 in 210' chance of attaining a healthy body weight
I think one has to ask a lot of questions before you can find the salient questions...diet and exercise do work, it's basic thermodynamics at play. How can individuals keep themselves motivated to stay on a regimen of fewer calories and more activity in a western world of perpetual plenty and sedentary work?
We weren't this fat earlier...even as recently as the 1970's, obese people were rare. According to http://lanekenworthy.net/2012/05/31/why-the-surge-in-obesity/ the most likely culprit isn't TV or the internet or more sedentary work, it's increased caloric consumption. Think of the 64oz Big Gulp at 7-11. 744 calories for a (non-diet) coca-cola at that size! And portion sizes keep going up in restaurants and grocery stores, given that even if its just 30 cents or a dollar to upsize a fast food meal, the added food in the portion costs much less than this, boosting profits on the sale. It's certainly in the immediate interest of businesses to maximize the wealth of their shareholders by boosting the profits of each sale. Consumers want a bargain. Both producers and consumers will resist any attempt by a government to regulate the portion size of food as an unwelcome intrusion of their freedom. Yet it will be the government and the health care system that will bear the external cost of their own populations slowly digging their own graves one fork-full at a time.
An effective solution that can be implemented into the society we have right now seems impossible for me to imagine.

Commented in Stop distracting yourself
Agreed.
It's weird, because whenever I get a call from someone and they ask what I'm doing I usually just say "nothing" because "thinking about stuff" has negative connotations for some reason. So a lot of the folks I know think I sit on my ass all day staring at a wall.
But that's not true at all! I'm always thinking about things to do. What is the next picture I'm going to draw? What would be a great story to tell and what medium should I use to tell it? Do I have any podcasts to edit and if so, how should I do it? What funny thing can I sneak into my Let's Play post-prod? Is there a melody running through my noggin somewhere? There's always something for me to do, I just have to spend some time thinking about them first.
This one-size-fits-all self help stuff always kind of gets on my tits, anyway, since everyone's mind works differently. My wife was telling me I should start meditating for some reason, but my brain doesn't stop running. There are projects to do! I can't spend my whole life with my eyes closed thinking about nothing.

Commented in Encryption: UK wants to ban/subvert it, that's a bad idea for all.
Another piece from WIRED: http://www.wired.com/2015/07/moussouris-wassenaar-open-comment-period/ "You Need to Speak Up For Internet Security. Right Now."
A history of the Crypto-Wars from the 1990's, linked from Bruce Schneier's Crypto-Gram newsletter for July 2015 (the News section https://www.schneier.com/crypto-gram/archives/2015/0715.html):
"As we're all gearing up to fight the Second Crypto War over governments' demands to be able to backdoor any cryptographic system, it pays for us to remember the history of the First Crypto War. The Open Technology Institute has written the story of those years in the mid-1990s. http://www.newamerica.org/oti/doomed-to-repea...ry-lessons-from-the-crypto-wars-of-the-1990s/ The Second Crypto War is going to be harder and nastier, and I am less optimistic that strong cryptography will win in the short term. https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2015/06/history_of_the_.html "

Commented in Scottish pub swaps kilts for pants after female patrons get handsy
...Can you imagine if I went into a restaurant and stuck my hand up a girl's skirt? I would be taken to the police station and rightly so.
This is the gist of the matter, really. Grown adults don't run around and shove their hands up under each other's clothing for any reason. Sure, the ladies were a bit tipsy, but that does not excuse them to act like utter idiots and paw on the help.
Personally, I wear a kilt on a regular basis during warm weather. It's comfortable as hell. Typically people ignore it. While I did have a few ladies ask me if I was "going regimental" at a Scottish Festival, there's been no other comments as I go about my day-to-day business.

Commented in The Bernie Sanders Surge Is About Bernie, Not Hillary
Personally, I would hate to see Sanders as VP. It would lessen his influence considerably. If he doesn't make it to president, he will much more effective in the Senate as a liberal voice. The VP is traditionally a powerless position, and there is no way Clinton would let him attack her from the left as her VP, which I want him to do if she wins.
And I think Sanders knows this and would never take it. And I think Clinton knows this and would never even ask.

Commented in Former Reddit CEO Yishan Wong delivers crushing comment to Reddit community. "We tried to let you govern yourselves and you failed"
Ellen's Blog. July 16th, 2015: Snoo carcass in alley this morning, pitchfork in bloated stomach. This website is afraid of me. I have seen its true face. The Front Page is an extended gutter and the gutter is full of piss and shit and when the drains finally clog, all the angry Redditors will drown. The accumulated filth of all their hate and rage will foam up about their waists and all of /r/CoonTown and /r/punchable_children will look up and shout "Save us!"... and I'll whisper "no."

Commented in This is the video Gardena police didn't want you to see
That's very true. It happens very often that people judge prematurely upon seeing an image or video and then uphold unsuported/malinformed opinions because they neglected to put it into context or ask questions. But context can be provided in the video, so you could only miss it by actively avoiding it.

Commented in New Reddit CEO wants to update content policy. Is holding an AMA Thursday, July 16th, 1pm pst.
I’d say you’re reading way too much into what I wrote, but.. that would be based on the assumption that you’re being sincere.
But I don’t think you are. I think you’re a psychopath who decided to play games with me. Now there’s a claim I can’t prove, but someone who’s familiar with psychos knows that it’s not baseless either.
you make a superiority/inferiority characterization based on race
But they do actually tend to be better dancers. They have bigger penises too. You see, this is one reason why I think you’re a psychopath: We all know those are facts. You know it too, but here you are, shaming me for making truthful observations.
you manage to work in the phrase “us whiteys.”
I meant that in a self-deprecating way, but that doesn’t really matter because it’s you who decides what’s acceptable for me to say, right?
Next, you give us an example of something you say and that you feel persecuted for saying. The exemplar you provide for “the truth” that “isn’t racist” is apparently the inherent criminality of a race.
Now if you were intellectually honest, instead of continuing to shame me (like a psychopath would), you could just dig up some crime American crime statistics (as I explicitly specified, to make sure my claim was true), and see that I was, in fact, speaking the truth.
I’ll save myself the trouble of digging them up for you, because it’s not like that would affect the way you conduct this conversation.
You‘re on a roll, now. Next up, you want to talk about quote hate speech unquote, because apparently the term bothers you on a basic level.
Hey, you actually got something right! The term does bother me “on a basic level”, because it’s mostly just a propaganda talking point for our rulers in their quest to gradually condition us into not speaking up about anything, until the whole world is one big North-Korea.
Your heart rate is up, you're getting your kicks now
That didn’t happen though. I’m calm even now!
Now, I remember there was some kind of a controversy a while back about the Planet of the Apes movies being recommended by Netflix in relation to other movies..
Huh? ”STORY TIME!” .. ? What the hell are you on about?
that dealt with the civil rights struggle of the Sixties and Seventies.
Oh, right. Racism! Black people vandalize and loot businesses that didn’t do anything to them because.. racism! But of course, and that’s also a good way to.. not give actual racists something substantial to point to?
You, on the other hand, clearly see black folks as what you call savage apes.
Now that’s a mighty broad brush. You shouldn’t generalize like that. Generalizations are bad. Think of how it makes people feel when you generalize about them!
how even your hypothetical police homicide victim deserved being shot
http://reason.com/blog/2015/03/09/doj-report-makes-a-strong-case-that-darr
Wilson neverthless had reason to believe that Brown, who was six feet, four inches tall and weighed nearly 300 pounds, meant him harm. Physical evidence and witness reports confirm that Brown punched Wilson in the face as the officer sat in his police SUV. Brown's DNA on Wilson's gun and the wound on Brown's thumb are consistent with Wilson's account that he drew his weapon in self-defense, that Brown grabbed it and tried to take control of it, and that Wilson fired at him during the struggle.

Commented in Successful repair of a Lido 2 handgrinder
Oh, hey, I saw this on Twitter the other day too!
I read your blog post too, assuming this is your picture. I'm suprised you managed to break the hopper at all to be honest, but one of my favourite things about OE is that they make their stuff easy to take apart... and that they sell individual bits for it. I fully expect my grinder to outlive me! Most (all?) the Lido 3 parts fit the Lido 2 too which is nice.

Commented in Former Reddit CEO Yishan Wong delivers crushing comment to Reddit community. "We tried to let you govern yourselves and you failed"
So, the original reddit of congenial discourse that everyone is so nostalgic about was only that way because of spez's careful manipulation of speech? Hilarious.
Honestly, I didn't leave reddit because of the cries of censorship (except for /r/news constantly deleting posts about the TPP, that pissed me right off and is true censorship if you ask me). I left because the discourse was so very, terribly toxic. To the point where i would censor myself by not posting something I really, really wanted to, in order to prevent those neckbeards Yishan was talking about from downvoting me while piling on the insults and threats.
Being a woman on reddit is really, truly scary today. Especially after the gamergate fiasco.

Commented in Disney World now lets you pretend to be a low-wage kitchen staffer for only $175 | Orlando Weekly
That sounds pretty fucking awesome to me! I'm not sure if the blog author's style is just perpetual snarkiness or if he just has an axe to grind against Disney, but the blog piece is rather underwhelming.

Commented in DIY Headphones from bullet casings
Honest question: do you think they would get confiscated? Or maybe they would ask you to open them or something, to prove there's nothing else hidden inside...
On another note, can black powder (or whatever they use in bullets) be detected by their scanners?

Commented in Woman Live-Tweets Awkward First Date Conversation From Cafe
I have to ask how Anne Thériault would feel about having her worst public interaction publicly tweeted by a stranger. Regardless of her motives, she has no real idea what actually happened between these two people. It terrifies me to think that someone might publish a conversation I had while I was at my worst, and exclaim "Look at this idiot!" That's the stuff of nightmares. Those dreams where you're in the office and you realize you forgot your pants have suddenly turned into YouTube's most viral video.

Commented in Former Reddit CEO says Ellen Pao was framed
To be honest I feel like the title is a bit sensationalist (and I know that is the title on the source page). To me, it implies that this was a deliberate action to make Pao look bad, which is not my impression after reading Yishan's comment. Reddit just reacted by throwing all of the blame onto Pao before knowing anything about the situation (even before anyone knew whether there was a valid reason for letting go of Victoria). I agree that Alexis should've come forward earlier, but even if he did very few people would've seen a comment downvoted into oblivion, and the Pao hate train was maximum velocity rather quickly so there was barely any window of opportunity to do so.
Edit: After thinking about it some more, there were other options, such as making a post on /r/blog or /r/announcements for transparency. I guess in general the entire situation was just handled atrociously anyways.
