      Reality tv is one reason we no longer have a tv.

    Selfies and selfie sticks.

      Yes! They're parts of what I call 'the age of me': modern society's acceptance, even encouragement, of self obsession. People simultaneously have this idea that social media is bringing us all closer together etc. etc., but it seems to me that people are just more concerned with self image and ensuring that image is seen by as many as possible. Thankfully Snapzu is a haven!

        You know what the proposed French translation for "selfie" is? Ego-portrait. It captures the essence of it so beautifully, the fact that word was created is the only positive thing I can find about selfies!

          Haha that is so spot on. The only person I know who owns one is probably the most egotistical person I've met. He spent the entire time at this bbq making ego-portraits of himself and his friend who were both dressed like guys from Baywatch. It was not a fancy dress party. Surreal.

      how is this a trend? i'm genuinely curious, I thought it was just a tongue-in-cheek way of describing out of shape guys in their 20's?

    I'm tired of the Trump stuff. He's doing this for his ducking TV show, not because he's seriously running. Unfortunately, running for president can now be the jumping off point for a TV career. That's his game, and he's good, but give me a break, Whitetopia, you can seriously expect him to win.

    • Fuyu

      I don't expect him to win, but people are taking the joke of "voting" for him far enough I fear him winning. As the polls stand now with the nominees I'm getting ready to jump into the Atlantic Ocean.

    Government corruption.

      That's not a trend, that's an inevitability. Government has power and power corrupts.

        This reminds me of the Total War series of games, where you control an empire (a bit like civilization) in a very realistic way. The bigger your empire, the bigger percentage of your money gets burnt by corruption. Also, the longer your governors are in place, the more corrupt they become, so even if they were very competent to start with, they end up making more harm than good, so you want to change them once in a while. It's not a parameter you can work on, it's just a fact. Learn to deal with it.

    Remakes. It hard being a fan of something with other fans when half of them want to refer you back to the "original" work to actually have an conversation.

    Surely we can make something that tries at originality.

      Someone once explained it to me like this. They said, movies, especially the top level movies are really expensive to make. So you need to find someone willing to invest all that money in your movie. When assesing these investment, they have to consider that it has become clear that remakes and certain types of movies will almost gaurentee viewers and thus profit from the investment due to its existing fan base, also with the popularity of things like neflix there is a lot of competition to the movie industry. So not only are they considering the issue of the higher risk of not making their money back due to the new idea not taking, but they are making these decisions in a pressure environment where they have very strong competition. The result is that the only way to get a high budget original movie made is to have it proposed by a big name director or actor or something that will lower the risk of loses.

      I too wish there were more original stuff being produced (and in the series world there seems to be some great stuff happening) but I can see why the movie industry loves remakes and sequels.

        Yeah, I heard that was the reasoning as well. But it saturates the face of the media with a lot of the same thing over and over again.

        Also, remakes kind of kill the joy of discovering something new and untried, something with limitless potential. I guess I'm hoping producers will toss that out for us again.

          I disagree, at least in certain situations. I'll use video games, specifically Final Fantasy 7 since that remake is coming out soon. I never played FF7 and now a day's I would never have been able to enjoy it without the remake. The game is far too old so it's graphically and mechanically bad. So for me, the remake is my chance to experience what people experienced nearly two decades ago.

          I think the problem is everyone focuses on remakes from the point of view of a current fan. That and the movie industry doesn't wait nearly as long as the gaming industry to put out remakes.

      That's not a problem with remakes, that's a problem with hipsters. Remakes that are done right are amazing for fans both new and old.

      I think you may be ready for independent and international cinema. There are original movies and TV series, but rarely big mainstream ones, mainly for the reasons explained by /u/Wenjarich. Also a shoot out to /t/moviesuggestions, just ask for either independent or otherwise original ones. And the best of those get remade by Hollywood. If you can't stand movies that aren't made by Hollywood (no judgement here), look for directors that are the products of these outside-Hollywood movie industries and started making movies for big US studios. Usually they make very good original content for Hollywood as well.

      Some directors in that category that I enjoy, in no particular order (out the top of my head) :

      - Denis Villeneuve;
      - Philippe Falardeau;
      - Alejandro González Iñárritu;
      - Guillermo Del Toro;
      - Sam Mendes;
      - Jason Reitman;
      - Wes Anderson

        Thank you so much! I actually think I've been dabbling into international waters for years on and off, but exposure and knowledge to them is one of the biggest obstacles for me, personally.

        Ever since Sherlock (BCC), I've had my eye on BCC for TV shows (which led me to discover Being Human and In the Flesh), and I've slowly transitioned from anime to Japanese and Korean live action movies.

        And I have deep seated love for B-horrors. So I will check out this tribe and your recommendations, they look right up my alley! :D

    The obsession so many people seem to have with High-Fives. Nothing wrong with High-Fives when it's actual euphoria, actual celebration, in fact very appropriate, but honestly at times it's gotten completely ridiculous. For example I was buying a pair of shoes today at Roadrunner Sports - when the guy finished measuring my feet with his fancy electronic gizmo he wanted to High-Five! Nuts! Completely OTT.

    Cilantro..I'd like to find the chef who thought it was a good idea to put it in everything and stick a bar of soap in his mouth cause that's how cilantro taste to me.

      you aren't alone, but it's genetic. For me, I love cilantro AND I don't think stink bugs smell that bad. You probably think stink bugs are the devil.

      HOW DARE YOU ARGUE WITH ME. Just joking. Although I would say anti Gamergates style is far worse, but I'm biased.

        Like Fuyu said, it's a shitshow on both sides but it's been an entire year and ms Quinn still can't live a semi-normal life because they're still harassing her and publishing any new addresses that she is forced to move to. Just fucking give it up.

        And "swatting" in America is pretty much attempted murder given the track record of police shootings.

        Edit: And most recently Donald Trump's using the internet shitshow brigade to harass a news anchor for asking a basic obvious question. Really? Y'all want to fight for that guy ?

        • nauthas
          +4

          Right so I'll break it down.

          "it's a shitshow on both sides but it's been an entire year and ms Quinn still can't live a semi-normal life because they're still harassing her and publishing any new addresses that she is forced to move to. Just fucking give it up." I never started. This is my main issue with Gamergate. While I do think Quinn can engage in hyperbole, both sides are bad for this. Throughout SPJ Airplay almost everyone on the panel got doxxed, those who weren't even a part of Gamergate too like Koretzky. So this is an issue both sides need to address, I just don#t know how they'd do it

          "And most recently Donald Trump's using the internet shitshow brigade to harass a news anchor for asking a basic obvious question. Really? Y'all want to fight for that guy " No, I'm a Bernie supporter, even though I'm Canadian. In fact, there were only a few people that ever said they supported Donald trump in Gamergate, one got retweeted. Then a, for lack of a better term, shit-storm blew up. A whole lot of people in Gamergate got painted as trump supporters, when most of them aren't because trump hates violent video games. On whatever trump did with the "shitshow brigade", I don't know enough to comment but it sounds like him. He is a racist and sexist pig in my eyes.

          I just want to point out that a lot of GG is back and forth. As much as there is a fringe, whether 3rd party or otherwise, of people who has doxxed in the name of GG, there's also like ms Quinn who has been known to doxx in the past (hell dump) on the other side too. That's why I "switch" a lot. While I like Gamergates goals, the ends do not justify the means (Even though Bob Chipman disagrees saying "Here's something you should know about me: I "believe" that there is (almost) no such thing as a bad tactic - only bad TARGETS")

            I wasn't talking directly to you. Just addressing Gamergaters in the expansive generality

              Ah ok sorry I thought you were addressing me directly when you said "Y'all want to fight for that guy ?" and " Y'all want to fight for that guy ?" Personally, I'm starting to stop giving a crap about gamergate. At the end of the day it's a lot easier just to ignore gamergate at this point and look for ethics without the bagging.

      • Fuyu

        Both sides are full of lunatics. I support what Gamergate stood originally (don't even know what they're after now a days) for but I'd never associate with the movement.

        • nauthas
          +4

          I flip. I support the movement but can't stand a lot of the people in it. If you haven't seen it yet this makes me interested again.

    Low rider jeans/pants. Seriously sick of seeing rear cheeks and bum crack poking out the back whenever someone bends over or squats down. Pull your damn pants up folks-you can never look good from that angle.
