    Remakes. It hard being a fan of something with other fans when half of them want to refer you back to the "original" work to actually have an conversation.

    Surely we can make something that tries at originality.

      Someone once explained it to me like this. They said, movies, especially the top level movies are really expensive to make. So you need to find someone willing to invest all that money in your movie. When assesing these investment, they have to consider that it has become clear that remakes and certain types of movies will almost gaurentee viewers and thus profit from the investment due to its existing fan base, also with the popularity of things like neflix there is a lot of competition to the movie industry. So not only are they considering the issue of the higher risk of not making their money back due to the new idea not taking, but they are making these decisions in a pressure environment where they have very strong competition. The result is that the only way to get a high budget original movie made is to have it proposed by a big name director or actor or something that will lower the risk of loses.

      I too wish there were more original stuff being produced (and in the series world there seems to be some great stuff happening) but I can see why the movie industry loves remakes and sequels.

        Yeah, I heard that was the reasoning as well. But it saturates the face of the media with a lot of the same thing over and over again.

        Also, remakes kind of kill the joy of discovering something new and untried, something with limitless potential. I guess I'm hoping producers will toss that out for us again.

          I disagree, at least in certain situations. I'll use video games, specifically Final Fantasy 7 since that remake is coming out soon. I never played FF7 and now a day's I would never have been able to enjoy it without the remake. The game is far too old so it's graphically and mechanically bad. So for me, the remake is my chance to experience what people experienced nearly two decades ago.

          I think the problem is everyone focuses on remakes from the point of view of a current fan. That and the movie industry doesn't wait nearly as long as the gaming industry to put out remakes.

      That's not a problem with remakes, that's a problem with hipsters. Remakes that are done right are amazing for fans both new and old.

      I think you may be ready for independent and international cinema. There are original movies and TV series, but rarely big mainstream ones, mainly for the reasons explained by /u/Wenjarich. Also a shoot out to /t/moviesuggestions, just ask for either independent or otherwise original ones. And the best of those get remade by Hollywood. If you can't stand movies that aren't made by Hollywood (no judgement here), look for directors that are the products of these outside-Hollywood movie industries and started making movies for big US studios. Usually they make very good original content for Hollywood as well.

      Some directors in that category that I enjoy, in no particular order (out the top of my head) :

      - Denis Villeneuve;
      - Philippe Falardeau;
      - Alejandro González Iñárritu;
      - Guillermo Del Toro;
      - Sam Mendes;
      - Jason Reitman;
      - Wes Anderson

        Thank you so much! I actually think I've been dabbling into international waters for years on and off, but exposure and knowledge to them is one of the biggest obstacles for me, personally.

        Ever since Sherlock (BCC), I've had my eye on BCC for TV shows (which led me to discover Being Human and In the Flesh), and I've slowly transitioned from anime to Japanese and Korean live action movies.

        And I have deep seated love for B-horrors. So I will check out this tribe and your recommendations, they look right up my alley! :D
