I totally agree. Costco is my go-to choice as well. I have 2 friends that work there and you are right when you talk about Costco treating their employees like actual human beings. My support of small local business has been made easier by my ban of Walmart, the fact that Target choose not to occupy the Zellers that was just down the street from my house, and I live in a 'bedroom' community that concentrates all its big box stores at the other end of town to accommodate all the commuters to Toronto.

Thanks for the follow up. I guess if it has manicured lawns it also has security to keep the riff-raff away. There is a problem in Toronto with empty condos. People from over seas (trying to not say China ;) ) buy them as investment opportunities then the condos/ houses/ buildings sit empty. I hear Vancouver has the same problem. All that manages to do is raise property prices to the point only wealthy foreigners can afford to buy. Everyone else rents. Going off topic so I'll stop.

Where abouts is this building /u/drunkenninja? Vancouver or elsewhere? I'm thinking the key to having it finished is people moving in and utilizing the empty buildings potential. That should be all the incentive those with money need. "Oh no, can't have someone living somewhere for free, that will never do. I'm not making any money. Profits before people don't 'cha know."

(ok, that was a very biased comment on my part, not leaving any room for an open minded discussion. I will work on that)

Wall Street Analysts Predict The Slow Demise Of Walmart And Target

The end of the big-box store era may soon be upon us. That’s the message of a research note published by Goldman Sachs analysts on Tuesday cutting their investment rating on shares of Walmart. Shoppers are increasingly turning to the web or...

"With surprising speed over the past week, the government has already shifted over 100 of these to a settlement outside of town (three floors a time) and is set to displace everyone living in the building, primarily to Valles del Tuy in the state of Miranda."

Huh, look at that. Just look at how quickly a government can act when there is something in it for them. Let's not think about the fact that these folks have lived and worked in the abandoned unfinished Tower of David since 1990 (another article has the date as 1994). Over 20 years this building has been a slum, some living there for 7 years, due to socialist leader Hugo Chavez. The people were quite resourceful, making homes, places to shop, exercise, and work for themselves despite their government. Over 20 years. Take a moment with that.

And now bam Chinese "bankers" (the move was started before the "bankers" interest was publicly confirmed) come along wanting to finish the building and bam again, placement is arranged for the people residing there.

Move along David, Goliath has arrived.

The music is telling me I should be feeling positive about this great altruistic move on Coca Colas part.

My brain is telling me the truth. A brand worth over $74 BILLION dollars, in the most expensive place on earth that treats its labourers like total shit including taking away their passports, is bragging about giving away a phone call to a working slave after charging them for their unhealthy product.

Wow Coke, slow claps for you.

Professor goes to big data to figure out if Apple slows down old iPhones when new ones come out

In the benign explanation, a slowdown of old phones is not a specific goal, but merely a side effect of optimizing the operating system for newer hardware

I worked at a call center for a cable company here in Canada and had the exact same experience. The company offered 3 services, TV, home phone, and internet. It was the agents job to up-sell every single customer every single time. If they had all 3 products you were to upgrade to a more expensive package. No/low up-sales or not trying hard enough meant you'd be written up in your twice weekly "coaching" sessions. Once you were written up you didn't receive your bonus for the month which took away the incentive to sell. No sales=no bonus. Sales but forgot to ask that one customer 8 times = no bonus. I ended up leaving after 6 months. Worse job I ever had. The thing is I adored helping the customers, I am really good at it. You know Comcast et al, sometimes when a customer calls in all they want is their issue resolved. I for one think that is how customer service should be. Sales should be separated out.

Corporations are people when it suits them to be. Most people I know are not able to move their 'head office' to another country to avoid paying taxes. Most people I know get arrested and put in jail when they break the laws. Most people I know don't steal their friends pensions and get away with it. Most people I know are told 'too bad' by the government when they lose money, they don't get bailed out and given huge personal bonuses. Most people I know are ethical, community minded, responsible, caring, and altruistic.

My husband is in charge of our cast iron. He's extremely meticulous on their care and upkeep. I'm not permitted to touch. I think I hear him whispering sweet nothings to them as he lovely runs a cloth ever so gently across their well seasoned surfaces.
