Commented in Reddit is changing because it wants celebrities to visit more
That vision makes sense to me. Famous redditors like Arnold Schwarzenegger really add to reddit's overall prestige, but they're still pretty rare. Celebrities just don't use reddit the way they use, say, Twitter. They come in, do an AMA, and get out forever after 15 minutes on the phone with Chooter.
Now, there are a number of reasons this is the case. For starters, reddit is traditionally hostile to women. It's no wonder female celebrities come through for AMAs and never stay behind. It's also why William Shatner, who was happy to be a redditor, eventually left.
But most importantly, being a redditor means sharing content in an uncontrolled environment. Twitter, for all its wilderness, can be a "safe" environment if you ignore the stuff addressed to you, which a PR person can easily do for you. But reddit is much more perilous. Ask Woody Harrelson or Morgan Freeman.
Chooter was that "safe space" for celebrities. Apparently, reddit admins saw this as a detriment to celebrities "going full reddit." I have a feeling that's the opposite of what they should have done... Time will tell.

Commented in Roddy Piper Accuses Steve Austin of Having His Podcast Taken Off Podcast One
I am of the opinion he probably has realized that he was in the wrong now, but at the same time I question why Austin of all people would have him removed rather than asking him to his face what the deal was. Of course we don't know what Austin really did here, he could have asked the Podcast people about it and they took the move to just get rid of Piper rather than ask about it. I'd really like to get Austin's side here.

Commented in Ellen Pao: Vast Majority of Users Don't Actually Care About Drama
From Ellen Pao in the link:
It was hard to communicate on the site, because my comments were being downvoted.
ROFL! Oh, wait, you're serious. Let me laugh even harder.
That's the worst excuse I've seen or heard uttered from an adult in many many years. My son can do better than that. Does she not realize that she is the CEO and she can put out whatever statement she wants on the front page? I have seen blog posts that get downvoted down to zero, and yet it's still going to go to the top of the page because it's an admin-controlled sub.

Commented in Ellen Pao: Vast Majority of Users Don't Actually Care About Drama
Honestly I haven't seen any of that on Reddit. But, maybe I've haven't been to the subreddit's where it's happening. My interests on there are mostly PC Gaming, My Little Pony, and Linux.

Commented in How the cult of celebrity is destroying American politics
Oh, look, a snarky response from the "famous" spaceghoti. Talking about me behind my back. Discounting my comment with two quick words instead of a discussion about said article. I thought y'all were different. I was brave enough to respond to "care to elaborate?" only to get knocked down. Thanks. At least I didn't get downvoted, amirite? That is your claim to fame, eh? I thought five to eight word responses were not acceptable either. A whole lot of promises broken, if you ask me.

Commented in "If you're unemployed, it's not because there isn't any work."
But then you'll be pissed because they raised taxes to build the school. The problem with infrastructure is everyone wants it, but no one wants to pay for it. You want great schools but any time they ask for money to pay for it, the pitchforks come out.

Commented in Why you probably won't get Windows 10 on 29 July
This reminds me, now that I've someone with experience to ask, was it easy to install the OS without having to log in with a Microsoft account? Would personally much prefer to simply have a local account on my machines at this time. :)

Commented in The Reddit Blackout Isn’t About One Fired Employee. It’s About a Dysfunctional Relationship at Reddit’s Core.
I understand your position and you may even be right in the specific case you mentioned. That said, however, I think the larger picture as a whole points blame at more than just the mods, and primarily at the CEO/management.
Mods are volunteer labor. Some are good, some are not. Positions of authority attract those who want authority. This can be a bad thing and can enlist tyrannical people into positions with too much power. I think it is fair to say that some of the mods on Reddit fit this description but I think it is equally fair to say that their CEO does too. Ellen Pao is ignoring the complaints of the Reddit community entirely. She is pretending that nothing is happening, and won't even make a blog post or text post to her own website to address the concerns of the community. This is unprofessional and unfortunate.
It is obvious that the company has been in flux since Ellen Pao took over and the results are seemingly disastrous. If I was a stakeholder in Reddit, I would demand her resignation, regardless of the mods and their actions. Obviously she has no idea what the community wants and how to competently communicate with them. She has shown how inept she is at dealing with sensitive issues multiple times- I think it is clear that her leadership is not what Reddit needs if it wants to survive.
EDIT TotallyTrusty pointed out that Ellen Pao has just addressed the Reddit Community, I withdrawal my criticism on this issue.

Commented in Budget Bytes
I love this blog! I've only made a few of the vegetarian/vegan recipes but they've always turned out amazing. Love how they have their own section too. As a broke University student this blog has been super helpful.

Commented in Headhunter tells millennials how to land jobs and keep them
I don't live or work in the US, but maybe my case could serve as an example.
I broke into the game industry with a degree in English Literature, to a position that required 2 years experience in the related field (Game Design). I got it by dressing up my resume and catering it to the job; my personal blog became "gaming journalism," my hours of experience playing PC games became "keen understanding of basic level design principles," and my prior experience teaching English as a foreign language became "communicates ideas clearly and confidently to a wide variety of audiences." I paraphrase and simplify, but I hope the idea is clear!

Commented in Scientists discover some spiders can sail like ships
http://mundotentacular.blogspot.com.br/2011/0...ditas-aranhas-forca-aerea-brasileira.html?m=1
Scarier than Nopes who sail like ships are spiders that fly using a baloon-like sack of silk. the blog post above (in portuguese, sorry) tels the story of a "war" the brazilian governm fought against one such spider, the Latrodectus curacaviensis. They even napalm-bombed an island in Guanabara Bay (in Rio de Janeiro). The spiders just sailed the hot air currents created by the fire and relocated... BTW, Latrodectus curacaviensis is a relative of the Blackwidow...

Commented in Greek referendum: finance minister Yanis Varoufakis resigns – live
Do you have a source for that? According to his blog, it comes across as though several members of those meetings were wary of his presence there, and Tsipras was like "Yeah, you should totally be absent from those meetings". At least that's my interpretation of his words.

Commented in TIL: Hermit lived in the forest for 30 years!
Isn't the society you're brought up in a huge catalyst for your moral choices? Easiest example that comes to mind is Middle East versus Western cultures. If you ask either side, they would both claim the other is morally corrupt. Someone going into the forest would take their moral values with them as they were. Maybe over time they would change as the lack of societal influence on them dissipated, but going in as a hermit, the previous influence would still be there. . .

Commented in School shootings, mass killings are 'contagious,' study finds
I'm glad that it's being studied. I had wondered about copycat crimes and the role the media plays in that. It's probably too much to ask for the media to tone the coverage down a bit. "If it bleeds, it leads," as they say.

Commented in Polish All the Nails – nail blog
As far as nail art culture goes, it's worth noting that this blog pretty much pioneered the art of 'hand placed glitter', an incredibly time consuming but visually impressive area of nail art. I have yet to find any other bloggers who can match the level of detail this blogger does, especially on such a consistent basis.

Commented in The rise of workplace spying
I've often said that we've infantilized the modern worker. Throw in some "fun" perks like video games and foosball tables, create a college-like work culture, and suddenly your employees stop feeling like adults that deserve fair treatment and pay and instead feel like children that look up to and follow authority blindly and rarely ask to be treated and paid like an expert in their field.
This kind of crap with spying on employees is just the other side of the coin. Employers feel more like parents that need to keep track of all their kids in case they do anything bad instead of trusting workers to do their jobs profesionally.
I think if most people were made aware of this kind of spying they'd rarely make a fuss these days. It's just mom and dad making sure they stay out of trouble. God forbid we demand to be treated like adults.

Commented in Reddit CEO Ellen Pao responds to admin firing outrage as petition against her gains steam
The fact that we're several days out and there hasn't been any r/announcement or r/blog post or ANYTHING public from ANY admin being like "yyyeah so that happened, let's talk about it" baffles me. Obviously it seems that there won't be one now, but the lack of transparency is such a turn-off.

Commented in Hacked!
I'm not seeing it listed here so I will explain the really simple way that most people's accounts get hacked - the security questions.
Most websites ask really dumb security questions. Let's take Valve as a great example because while they force multiple layers of security on their users, they have yet to fix the gaping hole that is their Security Questions.
1. What city were you born in? 2. What is the name of your school? 3. What is your favorite team? 4. What is your mother's maiden name? 5. What is the name of your pet? 6. Who was your childhood hero?
Really, all but the last question can be solved by adding someone on Facebook and monitoring who they interact with. The mother's maiden name could be difficult if she doesn't make it obvious (many people put their maiden name as a middle name.) But because of how many places use the mother's maiden name, if you are digging into someone's life, you're going to need to solve that one rather early on.
Edit: No idea why the formatting isn't working.

Commented in Microsoft might dump Windows Phone in favour of Android
Ask RIM (the guys that make Blackberry) and Jolla. They probably want build there own stack with things that are not possible in Android but they still need to have a large number of apps to actually be able to sell devices.
