If the ads were in the same vein as Reddit, (unobtrusive and geared towards m interests), then my adblock would let it pass until I told it otherwise. And I wouldn’t, because the ad isn’t actively distracting me.

I second this. It would also serve to provide exposure to lesser known tribes.

As long as the ads didn't make the page load 4 times slower, scream audio at me, break plugins, or take up half the page... nah. My Adblock is on blacklist mode... so I allow everything by default and only block if it pisses me off.

Almost certainly. Default status for me is blocking. That said, if it's a site I spend a lot of time on and there is no other way to support it,, I'll white list it. First annoying ad though, and it goes back to blocked.

Depends if it's the only way to the site is funded. I would prefer other options though.

Not particularly, unless if the ads are offensive or just in bad taste.

The Powers That Booze at Snapzu really, really don’t want ads. Never having ads is as much a part of the place as the magazine view.

Setting that aside for the moment, there are ads and then there are ads. Let’s say, just for kicks, that by “ads” we mean the kind that the still-struggling site MetaFilter has, which’re provided by an outfit called The Deck. Go ahead, visit MeFi, turn off your ad blocker for that site, and see how it feels. Could you imagine doing the same for Snapzu?

Now, what if having inoffensive, easy-on-the-eyes ads meant that the next time there was an influx of new users, the site would be responsive and self-supporting as it grew tremendously?

I went to MeFi using IE (without ad-blocks), it was just a tiny ad next to the content, nothing distracting about it. I wouldn't mind that much. I'd unblock Snapzu, as long as I can still block the ads' cookies using PrivacyBadger.

BTW, according to PrivacyBadger, there is a Doubleclick tracker on this page (stats.g.doubleclick.net) .

Ads on the Internet? What is this thing of which you speak?

I switched to this from Adblock,as Adblock let too much sleaze through. I also have Flashblock so self starting video ads don't annoy me. I hate ads with a passion! When I had a tv, ,I always muted them and found something else to do till they were done. And would I block ads? Do ducks swim? Do rabbits hop? The only ads I'm ok with are are the ones on Distrowatch which are about..Of all things...Linux!

        Do ducks swim?

Not really, almost all of the duck is floating on top of the water.

I prefer Guerrilla marketing by paid shills posing as legitimate users.

You know, the kind of ad campaigns done by Pepsi. Yeah, nothing else is a Pepsi. It's the Cola! Something for everyone. For those who think young. The best drink created worldwide!

    Pepsi.

Always Coca-Cola! It's a refreshing drink even for the hard working snapzu-visitor. So why not hop down to the drinks machine and get yourself a nice cold can of Coca-Cola. You deserve it.

I stopped using an ad blocker at all a while back. I hardly even notice them anymore.

I like ads because they are a great way to monetize things that you otherwise couldn't. I prefer to donate to sites I like to use, but not everyone will do that, and if a site gets a lot of traffic, ads can bring in a lot of extra revenue. Reddit has Reddit Gold, for example, but still has ads as a way to monetize lurkers and very occasional users. I would probably not block ads on Snapzu unless they were flashy, obtrusive, noisy, or pop-ups. Pop-ups are an instant block from me - sound too - but in general, I like to let a site passively make money off of my traffic.

It won't be that people will block Snapzu's ads, it's that they're already blocking ads.

as long as they aren't intrusive i'd let them slide. The second I get tricked into clicking on one they are gone and auto playing videos i'll flip out.

So long as pop up ads are a thing, yes.

  • idlethreat

    Yep. Zero doubt in it.

However, if there's other ways to fund it (donations, etc), I'd be happy to help out.

I'm almost certain I would, but it depends on the ads and how annoying the are too.

  • nauthas

Depends, I watch this site enough to white list it as long as it isn't in any way intrusive. In the blank space at the sides of my screen would be fine for me.

If "Snapzu had Ads" I wouldn't even know that it did. With Adblock, uBlock, and Ghostery all enabled there would be very little chance of I learning about them until I read about them. Then I'll continue on with my day and on Snapzu ad free.

  • Fooferhill

Definetly if I could. And I would probably not bother much with SNAPZU.

I am not opposed to seeing ads, but apparently the majority of ads shown these days are produced and provided by ad networks that are privacy invasive and engage in stealth tracking across sites. This behaviour is unacceptable to me and I block ads from known ad networks that disregard user privacy. For example, I block everything associated with doubleclick.net. Even the sites which I disable ublock Origin, the ads are still blocked due to either NoScript and/or Privacy Badger.

I rarely encounter online advertising and it's the website owners own fault for choosing ad companies that want to track and invade my privacy.

My default is to run add blocks at all times.

    BUT

I would tolerate non intrusive adds if they were needed because I like this site. Meh it has more to do with you people than anything else. I enjoy the civil, yet insightful, conversations and overall pleasantness of you guys and gals.

    In all honesty?

There is only one site where I disable my add block. Why? because the add revenues help pay for all the amazon gift cards I get from them. They have other cards but I stick with amazon. Technically they're paying me to watch these adds so I let my hatred of adds slide.

Nah, I don't mind ads unless they hijack my browser.
