Hito Steyerl is 2017's most influential artist
Art is powerful. Or at least it’s the construct of powerful forces, not always of the positive kind. This is something Steyerl recognises. ‘Contemporary art is made possible by neoliberal capital, plus the internet, biennials, art fairs, parallel pop-up histories and growing income inequalities,’ she told The Guardian this year. ‘Let’s add asymmetric warfare, real-estate speculation, tax evasion, money laundering and deregulated financial markets.’ Steyerl makes the top slot on this list because she actively attempts to disrupt this nexus of power.

How Taxpayers Keep the NFL Rich
Over three marvelous spring days in 2015, the National Football League threw itself a party otherwise known as the annual draft. The NFL took over Chicago’s storied lakefront Grant Park, where, in November 2008, Barack Obama had addressed a vast throng to accept the presidency of the United States. Some 200,000 football fans, including parents with kids, milled around in Grant Park, temporarily renamed Draft Town. Gigantic letters spelling out “NFL”...

How the Biggest Fabricator in Science Got Caught
Yoshitaka Fujii falsified 183 papers before statistics exposed him. In April of 2000, the journal Anesthesia & Analgesia published a letter to its editor from Peter Kranke and two colleagues that was fairly dripping with sarcasm. The trio of academic anesthesiologists took aim at an article published by a Japanese colleague named Yoshitaka Fujii, whose data on a drug to prevent nausea and vomiting after surgery were, they wrote, “incredibly nice.”

Dark Bobo Timelapse
This work exhibits a possible scenario of the vital Bobo Beast formation. Bobo Beasts are exceptional inanimate creatures; they revived in glass aquariums by chemical reactions, and while breathing heavily they are programmed to make their long journey up to meet the surface, where they get contaminated by the cold air and perish. They grow uniquely each time, and one can never foresee their upcoming looks; a Bobo planting could result in various body shapes, colors and longevity, or often at nothing at all. The Bobo progress was being shot by a stills camera every two minutes, over a dark incubation period of 6 days. Time compressions ratio in this video was adjusted to 1: 1700, meaning one second at video time implies half an hour at reality time. The work was completed in 2011. Lead Cub Timelapse
This video presents a typical, common grey Lead Cub in its initial times of growth; begins with the rapid soft period and turns into the slow spiking period. As a rule, Lead Cubs rely on their active bubbly core to maintain growth energy, which brings them to maturity in a very short while. The cub progress was being shot by a stills camera every 30 seconds, during 24 hours period, and turned into traditional stop-motion video. The work was completed in 2011.
