Commented in US opens new special probe into fatal Tesla crash
The self-driving feature is NOT self-driving! if you need a human behind the wheel to monitor the car's autopilot, it's safer just to have the human drive. There is literally no advantage to have a self driving car (as far as Tesla's current tech is concerned) since it means the human's attention is likely to wander, putting themselves and everyone else in danger. In fact, I'm wondering if it just makes driving MORE dangerous. I prefer to avoid being near Teslas on the road for exactly this reason.

Commented in Tesla built a network of connected cars. What happens when it goes down?
Sadly, the issue is that as we advance forward, pretty much everything experiences that "network" effect. As for trusting an electric vehicle brand... I would have to go with the company that's essentially decades ahead of the big auto manufacturers in pretty much every technology that counts. ie. battery tech, self driving, regenerative braking, electric engine advancements, onboard computing, over air updates, etc.
Remember, these are the same people that are currently building reusable rockets, creating materials that are stronger, more flexible and far better due to their experience in rockets. We must remember that Tesla / SpaceX have been paving the way since like 2008, and the big auto makers (in regards to Tesla) only truly took it seriously about 5 years ago, and even then, it's not like Tesla is standing still with the innovation, actually the opposite is true.

Commented in Tesla built a network of connected cars. What happens when it goes down?
This is why I'd never buy a Tesla product - they're trying to bundle in too much other junk that I don't want and that can cause problems like this. Even if I wanted (and if I could afford) an electric car, I'd buy one from one of the mainstream carmakers, not Tesla.

Commented in Tesla Introduced A Business Model The World Has Not Seen Before
It really is something else owning a Tesla, you can go from having a brand new car (Technology wise) when you buy it, and 6 months later.... Its brand new again.

Commented in Electricity 'beamed' to homes could do away with wire transmission cables
Well, yeah, but I don't think Tesla's system used microwaves. He called it long waves as I vaguely recall.

Commented in Electricity 'beamed' to homes could do away with wire transmission cables
I know of someone who would be thrilled to see this working. Thing is: he invented the same thing over 120 years ago.

Commented in New York to invest $750 million to expand electric-vehicle infrastructure
While many carmakers, including electric vehicle pioneer Tesla Inc, have significantly increased the range of vehicles on a single charge, many consumers are still put off by the higher sticker price and a lack of charging infrastructure, according to various surveys.
This is why I don't think they will catch on the way the eco people want them to. What New York is doing is a good idea, everywhere should be thinking about it, but the pricing is high. On top of that you have the wait times for a charge, I think it's something like 20 minutes for 80% and up to an hour for 100% if you have the fast charger and that's on the Nissan Leaf that goes maybe 70 miles per charge, it's probably more for a Tesla or other 400 mile battery.

Commented in U.S. House Democrats propose electric vehicle charging network
Tesla has already started a project like this. If it can be done without raising taxes, go for it.

Commented in BMW's new electric car powertrain system totally torpedoes Tesla
THIS IS KILLA OF THE IPHONE urhm... I mean... THE KILLA OF TESLA!

Commented in Tesla is working on a ‘dog mode’ to keep your puppies safe and cool inside their vehicles
It can be hard to tell whether a Tesla is on with the air conditioning running. Also, people will sometimes think a dog is confined in a small area in a Tesla when, thanks to it’s open Lotus design, they can easily get around in there. One shouldn’t leave dogs in a car, of course, but yes, there ought to be a way to signify to passers-by that life support systems are running. Hopefully before they grab a nearby rock.

Commented in Tesla's Musk pulled the plug on a settlement with the SEC at the last minute
He went ahead and signed off on it today: https://money.cnn.com/2018/09/29/technology/b...ess/elon-musk-tesla-sec-settlement/index.html I think his lawyer must have had a "Come to Jesus" talk with him.

Commented in Fearing climate change, experts in San Diego warn U.S. nuclear industry faces collapse
There are good reasons nuclear energy is going extinct. Including ALL the costs of mining, enrichment, transportation, building, operating decommissioning and radwaste storage it is by far the most expensive energy source. If the same amount of money and resources had been put into solar and other clean energies and energy storage, as has been wasted on nuclear, we would have more energy than we could use. The Tesla battery storage operations are proving that it could be done on a city/regional level. This propaganda piece by the nuclear industry and their apologists at the San Diego Union Tribune won't change any of those facts.

Commented in Elon Musk's Twitter rant is a smoke-and-mirrors tactic that hides the disturbing truth about Tesla
The article makes some good points. I agree that I'm not sure why there is so much drama with Tesla - it could put off some consumers. After all, other car manufacturers manage to get on with the business of making cars without generating so much drama.

Commented in To Understand the Future of Tesla, Look to the History of GM
Pretty good description. SpaceX has it's "Sloan", which is one of the reasons it has succeeded. Tesla needs one too.

Commented in Tesla owners almost crashes on video trying to recreate fatal Autopilot accident
This was scary to watch. I'm thinking that the auto pilot feature still needs a lot of AI tweaking for it to be as safe as Tesla makes it out to be.

Commented in Smartphones Are Killing Americans, But Nobody’s Counting
But getting mobile phone records after a crash typically involves a court order and, and even then, the records may not show much activity beyond a call or text.
Sounds like we need a new law removing such a burden keeping these good officers from doing their jobs! /s
Seriously, you can't blame all of this on cellphones, you have got to blame the car manufacturer's as well, those "infotainment" centers they all use now are ridiculous. If the radio station isn't programmed into it you can't just search from the steering wheel, you need to reach over and scroll through catagories, then find one of the dozen stations in that category, what if you want Pandora instead, well then you need to be sure the bluetooth is on and connected, then you need to reach over and tap some buttons to get to the screen then scroll to the app, what you don't like that station, here lets get another one. This is a far cry from years ago where you just hit a seek button to scan all available stations and hit it again to stop on one you wanted, or when you just hit a button to switch from AM to FM to Tape to CD. Hell, in the Tesla Model 3 you don't even have a dashboard, instead of glancing down you have to turn your head and look at the info center.

Commented in US labor board files complaint against Tesla over worker rights
Probably more beneficial for Tesla to get a fine from the Labor board than to see their workers become members of the UAW.
The National Labor Relations Board complaint claims Tesla violated workers' rights by requiring them to sign a confidentiality agreement.
This is as much a tech company as an auto plant, these agreements are commonplace and needed in tech.
Complaints were filed by three employees and the United Auto Workers union, which has encouraged Tesla employees to unionize.
Union, they are pissed Tesla doesn't want them and workers apparently denied them, so let's get some disgruntles and cause problems.

Commented in Volvo will go all electric by 2019, drop traditional engines
I guarantee they'll drop back down to Chevy Volt levels where it only goes a short distance on electric before going to gas, the US let alone the rest of the world doesn't have the infrastructure in place to make mass electric cars a good deal, you can't go more than about 70 miles in most electric cars and that fluctuates based on speed, weather, and other factors you can't calculate, that makes planning a day trip extremely hard to impossible. Even Tesla has said the Model 3 won't have a huge range, 150 miles I think it was for a very high price compared to say a 45mpg Honda Accord or Civic or the Toyota Prius.

Commented in Elon Musk threatens to leave White House councils over Paris deal
I'm interested to see how this plays out. If Trump does indeed pull out of the treaty then it seemingly goes against against everything Musk is trying to achieve so it is understandable he'd be done. I thought it interesting to that Tesla, SpaceX and The Boring Company weren't signatures on the open letter that was linked to in that article. Nothing implied, I just found it curious.

Commented in War of Currents, War of Words -- Who Said It: Tesla or Edison
Edison was more of a “money man” who had visions he would relentlessly struggle to bring into the realm of reality. To do this he would hire great minds like Tesla. Tesla, on the other hand, was a “do for the people” type of guy, which was his downfall. In modern terms, Edison was the Microsoft of his times, and Tesla was the Linux of his times. This is not meant to mean that Linux is on it's way out, but there are some very powerful forces that go after things that are geared towards “for the people”, and Tesla was brought down by these forces, big time.

Commented in Truck drivers are getting America's biggest pay raises
I guess this is so they can save for when they get replaced by self-driving trucks. If I were a truck driver, I'd be investing all that extra money in Tesla/Google stock.

Commented in A Second Self-Driving Tesla Crash Is Reported
About 5 million car accidents with 33 thousand deaths each year in the US: no newspaper gives a fuck.
Google's selfdriving car project: 1.5 million kilometers driven, 12 accidents, all caused by humans: here and there applauded, small story.
Tesla has two accidents in a few weeks time: major news attention, people doubt technology, huge amount of discussions ensue.
Logic? None.

Commented in Tesla accused of exploiting cheap labor to make its factories (updated)
"at least one of Tesla's contractors has been using sub-contracted, low-paid labor (as little as $5 per hour) from eastern Europe to work on the automaker's facilities"
The problem is that companies do not necessarily know how the contractor handles it's employees. Remember that the contractor are responsible for the well being and pay for the workers. Whether we think it is right or wrong, Tesla is not responsible for the injuries and pay to these worker's.

Commented in Netherlands looks to ban all non-electric cars by 2025
Interesting and ambitious plan. The environmental benefits of electric cars really depend on the energy source. As the following article demonstrates if electric vehicles are charged via a carbon intensive grid then they may not be as efficient as you might expect. http://www.gogeteco.com/electric-commuter-bike-vs-tesla-model-3/
This article compares the energy efficiency of different modes of transport including walking, riding, cars, trains, planes and electric vehicles. It suggests that electric cars are only marginally better that modern jet airliners in energy efficiency if you use carbon based fuel to generate the electricity. Interestingly electric pedal assist bikes turn out to be 10 times more efficient than electric cars.
