Is it just me or is the "iProduct" name starting to get really old? Anyways, seems like a pretty great idea from a business perspective.

I thought it was worn out in 2007. Pretty weird that people are still doing it.

It's all marketing and brand recognition. Think about how long the iProducts have been on the market, there's a whole generation (well at least part of it) that's grown up using Apple products. Then you have all the people lagging behind, just in the last 5 years more and more older people have been using smartphones here in Germany. The iStuff is easily recognizeable and many see it as "modern technology" and "high quality". They are just bandwagoning and rebranding themselves as something new and modern and exciting... for the average joe. Stuff like this never caters to you and me.

I didn't really mind it back in '07, but I agree it's 2015 now and time to move on from the "iBrand." Hell, even Apple themselves are moving away from it.

Did the original version of bubble wrap pop so often during transit that engineering a 'better' version was necessary?

I can't imagine so, the reason bubble wrap was so good was that it required a ton of force on a small area for just one bubble to pop. And in transit there's not often a lot of specific force, rather there was a lot of force that was spread out. Bubble wrap is great at that because it can spread out the force amongst thousands of bubbles.

      Bubbles.

    Can't stop the pop!!!

I'll go with traditional bubble wrap. This makes me sad.

The person who developed this must be fun at parties.

    - What do you do for a living?

    - Well, you know how bubble wrap pops?

    - Yeah! I love popping bubble wrap!!

    - Well, I'm making it so you can't pop it anymore.

Good thing we can't/don't downvote for bad news. :(

Seriously, from a business standpoint it sounds like eventually regular bubble wrap will be phased out. They really want to sell these machines for a thousand to five thousand a pop to inflate the new bubble wrap. On top of that money they will probably save hundreds of millions on shipping costs, when you can take shipping down to one fiftieth of the original size, that means tons of weight off the truck or tons more product on one truck, that means less money spent on getting product to market. That's several million in savings or billions in profit.
