I can't imagine so, the reason bubble wrap was so good was that it required a ton of force on a small area for just one bubble to pop. And in transit there's not often a lot of specific force, rather there was a lot of force that was spread out. Bubble wrap is great at that because it can spread out the force amongst thousands of bubbles.
Did the original version of bubble wrap pop so often during transit that engineering a 'better' version was necessary?
