Tell us your favourite, weird snack and food combinations

As a child I was shown Mac and cheese... With cornflakes baked in. And I absolutely love it. What weird food or gross combinations do guys love?

My brother eats ketchup sandwiches. No, not with anything else. Two slices of bread, a squirt of ketchup between, and yum. He also puts ketchup on pizza. The boy loves ketchup.

    No, I'm not kidding.

Cornflakes baked in mac and cheese to make a crispy crust isn't that weird. I know people that use crushed Ritz crackers or Cap'n Crunch as the breading for making fried chicken - so don't feel too bad.

Me? Nothing super weird. I enjoy dipping my fries (chips for you UK folk) in chocolate shakes for a sweet/salty snack. Not unheard of, but I wouldn't necessarily call it normal either.

I absolutely hate ketchup, it's sweet and disgusting, but I always put it on scrambled eggs or boxed mac n cheese. So good.

I used to do the sauce thing frequently. That or bread with all purpose seasoning on it.

Dipping your bread into a tomato sauce actually is pretty close to a ketchup sandwich, isn't it? I guess it's not that weird after all.

I love chips and chocolate shakes. Maccas have them both for cheap.

Dipping the chips into milkshakes is an amazing sensation - sweet and salty, they complement each other. I've never had a taste for tomato sauce but my youngest sister also had a thing for tomato sauce sandwiches whereas my older sister ate nothing but Mayonnaise sandwiches for a year.

Why does the world seem to hate Mayonnaise?

Mayonnaise is king of the condiments for me, 100% of the time. I eat it with everything: sandwhich, meat, fries, pizza.

        Also, classy username.

It is for me too alongside colmans English mustard. Australian mayonnaise however looks, tastes and smells like pva glue. Not all mayonnaise is created equally.

Chips in milkshakes, I have to try that sometime.

The weird thing is, I'll eat pretty much every tomato product, so long as it isn't tomato itself, tomato juice, or tomato soup. Anything else, I can eat. Same with onions. Cooked into something, fine, but don't give me a raw slice - but onion rings and grilled onions are fine.

        Oh, and I love mayonnaise.

My grandma once made me waffles with bacon and syrup. It was incredible

I thought it was fried chicken and waffles.

lol I just remembered I've had chicken waffles years ago. That's a pretty damn good combo as well.

Our local pub added it to their menu recently. I had no idea it was actually a thing in southern USA.

Well if you are ever in LA I recommend Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles

Yes! I never thought it was that weird, but I love this. The peanut butter gets all melty on the warm waffle. The best.

Ever had a toasted (or grilled) peanut butter and jelly sandwich? (Jelly optional.) Or peanut butter on a toasted raisin bagel? It's amazing.

Peanut Butter and Mayo on my cheeseburger. Contrary to popular opinion, peanut butter can go well on lots of things.

Someone I would ride the bus with always ate this, and it smelled terrible, made me gag, and made me hate them even more. So I think if I ever had a chance at liking it, it no longer is present :/

Honey and thinly sliced red onions in a granary bread sandwich

    Seaweed sheets and nutella

    Tomato Jam

Cucumber sandwiches - Thinly sliced cucumber on mothers pride with salted organic scottish butter

Tomato jam is basically ketchup right?

      • cunt
        +1

No. Tomato jam is completely different from tomato sauce. Think rhubarb or bramble jam

I can only think of strawberry jam. That's the only flavour I've had.

It wouldn't be weird in Europe/UK, but chips/fries dipped in mayonnaise. I LOVE that.

A strawberry and cheddar cheese sandwich.

Buttered bread with crisps/chips on it - my mother always called it a chip butte, but I don't think that's it's true form.

The couple of times I've had deep fried ice cream they used cornflakes as the basis of the crust. Not that weird, but not something you see every day.

Come to think of it, anything deep fried that's really crispy normally uses breakfast cereal as a base. Cornflakes, Captain crunch. Interesting.

Check out how cornflakes were discovered. Even weirder than putting them as a topping on ice cream! ;)

You're Southern-ing wrong. The traditional combination is peanuts and Pepsi. Now to do this properly, the Pepsi needs to be ice-cold, the peanuts dry-roasted, and the Pepsi in a glass bottle.

French Fries dipped in a thick chocolate shake. Waffles dipped in yogurt. Peanut M&Ms in hot buttered popcorn. Tuna mixed into mac n cheese. Avocado slices on Ritz crackers. Graham crackers dipped in fresh apple cider. I might think about food too much.

Mac and cheese with tuna fish was a childhood staple that I didn't know was weird until I told my husband. He thinks it's absolutely disgusting, but sometimes I get cravings for that pungent combination. Of course there was also Mac and Cheese with sliced hotdogs, but I think a lot of us had that as kids. Or am I wrong?

    • OldTallGuy
      +3

Mac and Cheese with Hot Dogs is still one of my favorite meals, add some baked beans on the side and I'm a kid again. But I agree with your husband on the tuna fish, it must be an aquired taste that I have no desire to aquire.

Hear me out. Take a square or chocolate and a slice of cheese. Now eat them together. That's it. I, personally, like milk chocolate and sharp cheddar cheese, but you can play with combos. Dark chocolate and American cheese is also pretty good.

    Just try it.

Some stuff I used to eat as a kid (and still do sometimes, thanks grandma):

    - Slice of white bread, brown sugar and cream.
    - Dip my pizza in ketchup. Way too much ketchup.
    - Actually, I just love that Heinz a bit too much. Pretty much anything salty is good with ketchup to me. Veggies, meat, name it, I probably tried it with ketchup at least once.
    - Chicken drumsticks with a Diet Coke based sauce (YUMMY STUFF)
    - I kind of put anything in my hamburgers.

I like eating too much, so I try to restrain myself and not eat all that stuff though. Trying to lose weight (got at least 30 pounds to lose, but just began training last week, so far so good)!

Yeah, had to cut down on that though, as I discovered I have a pretty bad lactose intolerance. There are lactose free options for milk/cream and cheese, but they're goddamn expensive, and I don't want to rely on Lactaid (lactase enzyme) all the time, so I cut down on dairy products. Which is a shame, cause I really love cheese, ice cream and pretty much every goddamn pastry out there.

        I'm a sad lactose intolerant man :(

I simply love eating my eggs with syrup. The two flavors really mix well to give it a really savory taste. If you ever have the time, try making some over easy, or sunny side up eggs with a dash of pepper, and adobe. After that put on a smidgen of syrup and eat it like that. Simply, delicious.

Does odd things made into wine count? I just finished some onion wine......

    • Jackalope
      +2

What is it like? The recipes I find for onion wine list either 1:1:2 or 2:1:2 of onions, potato, and raisins. I'm still trying to figure out what the flavor profile would be like...Sweet vidalia? Sweet raisin? Bland potato?

      • hitthee (edited 8 years ago)
        +2

Well my concoction was from a homebrew forum.

1lb of Vidalia onions 1 lb golden sultanas 1/2 lb russet potatoes 2lbs of sugar a packet of wine yeast and the rest spring water per gallon batch.

What does it taste like? not bad at all .

It's flavor is hard to describe hah ever have the sweet onion sauce at subway? that's as close as I can think of lol but subtract the acid and oil flavors

but with a dash of taragon, some rosemerry and sage it is one of the best marinades for pork out there in my opinion

A lot of my experiments in wine making end up in experiments in cooking lol.

Not necessarily my favorite but cornbread and green chile sauce.

I only put it together because I was clearing out my fridge and had both of those sitting there for as long as I can remember. It tasted surprisingly good, all things considered.
