Hey guys I want to start watching more, where should I start

Hi all I am gonna start watching some more anime as I have a lot more free time now. I've seen Dragon ball z which I liked, I am also a huge fan of cowboy bebop and the movie Akira but that's about it. Any recommendations would be must appreciated! Just tell me your favorites because I am open to watch anything

I would try different genre's to see all the variety there is out there. I'm a little drunk and tired so I'll just give keywords instead of actual synopsis.

    Steins;Gate Sci-fi, Time Travel.

Usagi Drop Heartwarming, Slice of life, Parenthood.

Planetes Space exploration, Politics, Romance, also some Comedy.

Neon Genesis Evangelion Action, Depression, Mechs, Aliens, What the Fuck.

I would recommend for you : - Full Metal Alchemist brotherhood

    - Baccano

    - Fate/Zero then Unlimited Blade Works (2014) don't watch the Fate/stay night serie and UBW movie.

    - Steins;Gate

    Other personal favorites :

    - Shinsekai Yori

    - Bakemonogatari & sequels/prequels

    - No Game no Life

    - Hyouka

    - Suzumiya Haruhi (the movie, but you need to see the 2 seasons for it to make sense)

    - Madoka Magica

    - Neon Genesis Evangelion

    -Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Edit: could not get the list formatting to work.

I was late arriving to the Fate series, started with stay night. Bloody loved it, how come you're against it?

F/SN is an amazing visual novel by type moon. Like really great. There are 3 "route" (I don't the correct wording in english) : Fate, UBW (unlimited blades works) and HF (Heaven Feel). The player discovers them in this order.

Studio Deen got the adaptation of the 1st "route" (Fate) as a tv series and the 2nd (Unlimited Blade Works) as a movie. They butcher it. Emiya was already pretty hard to get behind, but them made it really hard with poor dialogue ("People die when they are killed") and a terrible script.

UFOtable got the right to do a prequel Fate/Zero witch is pretty great but spoils the end of Fate/Stay Night. And in 2014-2015 they did a re-adaptation of UBW as a tv series and it turned out pretty good.

If you are brave enough I would recommend the Visual Novel (around 70h for Fate/UBW/HF) then watch Fate/zero then UBW (2014).

Check out Baccano, but be sure to watch the dubbed version. A lot of people in the anime community prefer to watch subs instead of dubs, however I think most people agree that Baccano is the exception to this rule.

If you're a fan of Cowboy Bebop, then you might also like Trigun, it's a little bit lighter.
Other favorites in no particular order...

    - Spice & Wolf
    - Tengen Toppa Gurren Langan
    - Macross (There's a lot of it, start with Macross F aka Macross Frontier)
    - Gundam 00 Season 1 and 2 + Movie
    - Kill la Kill
    - Panty and Stocking (NSFW)
    - Tiger and Bunny
    - Hataraku Maou-sama! (The Devil is a Part Timer!)
    - Code Geass
    - To Love Ru
    - Mayo Chiki!

It's just a random jumble, spanning multiple genres, there's some must watches in there, but there's also a few things that will help you figure out what do you like and what you don't.

Watch Death Note. Watch Code Geass. Watch Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin).

If you're into Dragonball Z related anime, watch One Piece, Naruto, Bleach.

If you're into mature, dramatic, messed up experiences, I can recommend Kaiji, Gantz.

Since you haven't seen much head over to mal and check out the anime top list - It's a somewhat good indicator. Just pick a show that seems interesting, read the synopsis and you are good to go!

My personal favorites are Clannad, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Dragon Ball Z, and Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions. I would definitely recommend all of those, but if you liked Dragon Ball Z, maybe try Attack on Titan, Full Metal Alchemist, or Soul Eater. Hope there's something here that you like!

I consider Fullmetal Alchemist one of the most accessible shows ever created. Extremely likable characters, an immersive world, and wonderful story. If you liked fight scenes, this show has some very well-choreographed ones throughout. There are two series. The first series came out in 2003 and diverges greatly from the source material towards the end due to the story not being completed yet, so they came up with their own ending. The second series, subtitled "Brotherhood" is much closer to the source material and came out in 2009. Both are fantastic shows and I recommend watching both if you ever have the time, but if you only want to watch one, I personally prefer Brotherhood as the story follows the direction the manga author originally intended. You do not need to watch either series to understand the other so choose whichever you'd rather watch. This series is also one of the few cases where I greatly prefer the dub to the subs as well. This shows is not my favorite, but it is still a great show and the one I always recommend to friends when they want to get more into anime.

Anything by Miyazaki is a shoe in of course. Ghost in the Shell is incredible, as is Samurai Champloo. I have a huge list of anime to watch if you want more than those though.

Definitely check out some of the underrated classics like DN Angel, Birdy: The Mighty Decode (Can't stress this one enough, it's sorely underrated), and the .hack series, they've all got a ton of stuff worth seeing. And if you can stomach a bit of content, Higurashi and Umineko are both very good horror/mystery series.

The suggestions in this thread are great! You should definitely check them out. If you want to have an easier time keeping track of all of them, try making an account on myanimelist.net . I would be lost without it. Also, check out Mushshi I've been watching it lately, and I think it's something a lot of different types of people could enjoy.
