Commented in Scientists Just Quantified The Shocking Extent of Type 2 Diabetes Due to Poor Diet
And who promotes this poor diet? The food industry. It all started with Ancil Keys and his heart hypothesis that saturated fat caused heart disease...This has since been disproven. So the food industry removed said fat from food replacing it with sugar...Much to their delight,they noted people loved sugar,so it was put in everything,and now we have an epidemic of obesity and diabetes.

Commented in In Apple’s world, you’ll die without its watch
I do have some serious heart stuff going down,but my pacemaker is monitored by a monitor that sits on my bedside table. I have the usual stuff to monitor my heart and o2 and no way am I getting an Apple watch. The only reason I have an IPhone is cause it was a gift and I only use it as a phone cause I like my Ubuntu computers better.

Commented in Trump's Border Wall Torn Apart by Arizona Monsoon Rains
I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Trump, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away." -

Commented in Colin Kaepernick & Impossible Foods Plan To Feed 1 Million People
Feeding a million people processed glop they did not evolve to eat. Nice/s You would not feed a dog this way,but somehow it's ok to feed a human this way,but it's all about $$$. I only recently found out about plant steroids ans the dangers of seed oils,like Canola. The heart hypothesis was debunked ages ago.

Commented in Controversial New Theory Suggests Life Wasn't a Fluke of Biology—It Was Physics
Seems quite plausible if speculative
viruses are interesting molecular strains, for instance
they are long protein-like chains “floating” around till they are near complete RNA molecules where they can form covalent bonds with compatible molecules i.e. cells and in so doing become complete proteins able to reproduce. but it’s not a virus is a living thing which “wants” to reproduce, so it must be some sort of chemical reaction which is driving the process and a chemical reaction is at its heart about energy and physics of atom bonds
it’s not that far of stretch to imagine a few of simpler kinds of things like simple viruses floating around in conditions like England describes, bumping into each other and forming longer and more complex chains (which over time may have stabilized into complete RNA able to self replicate)
in fact, didn’t we recently read something about the cell mitochondrion of cells being self sufficient but in a symbiotic relationship with other parts inside the cell membrane? Someone correct me but as I recall essentially mitochondrion are processing oxygen into a byproduct for the rest of the cellular ecosystem to consume in return for basically protection and a regular supply of oxygen... something along those lines (they also found free-floating mitochondrion in blood and red blood cells don’t have mitochondrion)

Commented in Boris Johnson 'could be jailed for refusing to seek Brexit delay'
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or being hated, don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son! -
Commented in Beyond Meat says its burgers are healthier than beef. Health experts aren't so sure
I eat unprocessed meat and I feel it is healthier that processed soy. I've already posted here on the research on soy and this latest processed frankenfood.
Because i have post infectious irritable bowel syndrome, I can't eat beans, quinoa or lentils without being in a world of pain. And I agree with you. If I could eat them,I'd want the real McCoy,not processed, plasticized glop that has Round Up and who knows what else in it.Fake food is fake food and this is as fake as it gets.
The most recent study the company pointed to was published in June by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. It found that upping one's red meat intake — processed red meat, in particular — increased the risk of premature death.
I don't buy it that red meat or saturated fat is unhealthy. Now processed anything is bad,and the more it's processed,the worse it is for us. And that means most of the boxed/frozen,"convenience foods" in the grocery stores...And of course fake meat.
Harvard School of Public Health found no connection between eating unprocessed red meat and the development of heart disease and diabetes,
What is ignored in these studies is the elephant in the room,which is in fact,processed food of all kinds and the true culprit,which is SUGAR. These are always observational studies,which are notoriously sloppy.

Commented in Mothers giving away babies in Venezuela
Stupid, greedy people in power did that. You can blame socialism, you can blame popular sovereignty — Hell, you can blame the desperately poor if you like. Ginning up a scapegoat worked for Chavez. Maybe if you really put your back into it you could blame poverty itself, endemic bigotry, and the dire instability of Venezuela's tiny former land-holding plutocracy, but you might have to put on your glasses. Whereas you can make out the rough shape of humanity and curse it as socialism without bothering to even look up. That's cool. I'm not judgy. I have a similar hangup about slavery, genocide, colonialism and capitalism. Only, at heart, I know it's people not their -isms.

Commented in Anne Hathaway denounces white privilege in award speech
Pretty sure society and nature flourishes and perpetuates around heterosexuality.
Well, pretty sure life perpetuates around not getting killed. Yet, self-sacrifice of the kind that makes people run into burning buildings or into enemy fire across No Man's Land is still a part of who we are. How does that happen? Is there an evolutionary advantage in altruism that pays off in the long, long run? There are those who speculate the answer there may lie in something called "kin selection." The advantage may well be in the protection of one's kin. The biologist J. B. S. Haldane once said he was prepared to lay down his life for eight cousins or two brothers, and it's not too far to speculate that may be at the heart of the matter.
Homosexuality is widespread in the animal kingdom. How hard can it be to imagine there may be an evolutionary advantage in that? Or that it's a part of life?
To associate ethnicity and sexuality (or gender) is a false dichotomy.
Not a dichotomy.
gender stereotypes (which evolved over what was best to perpetuate society)
Any basis for that conjecture, or are we just riffing here?
HOWEVER, sexuality is not
Easy for you to say. For many folks, their sexuality is a thing. I'm not altogether clear why someone would think that was up to them to decide for others.
Goodness these people think in such small, myopic terms.
"These people?" Eesh. Right back at ya.
Yes, when will lesbians learn their place?

Commented in A Jolt To The Jugular! You’re Insured But Still Owe $109K For Your Heart Attack
That is scary. It seems so wrong when someone has paid all their insurance premiums, that they are not protected from this sort of thing. He had a heart attack and therefore was taken by ambulance to the nearest hospital - he didn't have a choice about which one. In these situations where the patient has no choice and has a life-threatening emergency, it shouldn't matter if it's in-network and out-of-network.
Plus, most health plans have an out-of-network maximum that even for out-of-network situations there is a capped limit that the patient has to pay (usually far, far less than 109K!!) So I am shocked that this sort of thing happened to this man, who is grappling with this situation on top of recovering from a heart attack where he nearly died.
I am glad reporters followed this situation. It makes you wonder how many less-reported or less-publicized cases there are.

Commented in Trump tells supporters, 'What you're seeing ... is not what's happening'
You see a lot about this quote right now. Nearly every time, completely out of context. Here’s the quote:
I mean, I saw a piece on NBC today. NBC — not just CNN. CNN is the worst. (Laughter.) But I saw a piece on NBC; it was heart-throbbing. They were interviewing people — they probably go through 20, and then they pick the one that sounds like the worst. But they went through a group of people. In fact, I wanted to say, “I got to do something about this Trump.” (Laughter.) Terrible.
And that piece was done by the lobbyists and by the people that they hire. It was a total setup. This country is doing better than it’s ever done before, economically. This is the time to take off the rip-off of tariff. We have to do it. (Applause.).
You know, other countries have tariffs on us. So when I say, “Well, I’m going to put tariffs on them, they all start screaming, ‘He’s using tariffs.’” China charges us, when we make a car, a 25 percent tariff. We charge them 2.5 percent. Other than that, it’s a fair deal. Okay? (Laughter.)
Similar things with other countries, like the European Union. They’re a big abuser. But it’s all working out. And just remember: What you’re seeing and what you’re reading is not what’s happening.
I’m not going to defend the man. I can’t even work up pity for him. However, since I’d rather deal in truth than groupthink, and empty-headed smears and distortions don’t seem to win elections lately, let’s get a sense of what that context was. Have a look at the first story in today’s New York Times.

Commented in Don’t feed the trolls, and other hideous lies
First off, the writer spends too much time on writing cleverly than on writing to the point. Secondly, they falls prey to their own mistake of over-simplification of the issue, summing up all Trolls in all eras and contexts - and conveniently ignoring the fact that the catch-phrase behind the article sprung from a specific one, to which it was particularly suited. It's never been a good fit outside of Forums & Newsgroups, where there is a 'Conversational' setting. IMO, Twitter isn't really that. Thirdly, as Starflower points out, they ignore Blocking and other Mod controls. Lastly, arguing with Trolls is ultimately pointless - it's the old saw of Wrestling With A Pig: "You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it", so really "The biggest mistake we ever made with trolls was" validating them and their behavior. You stand up and call them on it, and you don't allow room for debate. Behave or Begone. Confronting is not Feeding. And don't take anything they say to heart - most of the shit they say, they don't even believe, and seriously, Consider The Source...

Commented in Novichok nerve agent strikes two new victims in the UK
Oh go fuck yourself you asshole. I am humbled that I could ever have an influence on those I admire and care about...in that sort of-kinda've way. This looks awkward. So go fuck yourself. There, fixed it.
But seriously, thank you!
In the many years I have followed you, you speak from your heart, consistently, this is rare. You are unafraid, unabashed when you speak. And when you speak, people listen. They may or may not agree with you, and this to me is the greatest part of speaking. People listen. Without that, we only speak to ourselves.
You have gifts that many don't have. You are smart, observant, aware of many things that most are not. Use this gift for as long as you can, share, as you do, care, as you do and never be afraid to be wrong.
