When looking for phrases that define Trump's presidency, you could do worse than his declaration yesterday: "What you're seeing ... is not what's happening."

Who you going to believe? Me? Or your lying eyes and ears?
You see a lot about this quote right now. Nearly every time, completely out of context. Here’s the quote:
I’m not going to defend the man. I can’t even work up pity for him. However, since I’d rather deal in truth than groupthink, and empty-headed smears and distortions don’t seem to win elections lately, let’s get a sense of what that context was. Have a look at the first story in today’s New York Times.
“The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.” - George Orwell, in the novel 1984.
There's this great line in Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War, "The search for truth strains the patience of most people, who would rather believe the first things that come to hand."
So honestly, did you see any of the speech or read any of the transcript, or are you riffing off what everyone else in your information sub-bubble is riffing off? Because if you are, you might want to examine the irony in that self-satire.
