2015.07.03 Daily Dose: Reddit Drama, New Members, and Your Weekend Plans

The Daily Dose is a user-created discussion series where Snapzu members can check in with each other in a relaxed environment.
We are experimenting with different formats and ideas, so feedback is very welcome!

Happy Friday, Snapzites!

I fear today's post will be drowned by all the introductions in the lounge, but there is much to talk about.

Reddit Drama

Once again, the reddit administration has revealed a startling incompetence. Their missteps become quite a bit more profound when you consider that they're not hobbyists but professionals who've been hired for the sole purpose of overseeing the community. It's a bit baffling. The site is comprised almost entirely of user-generated content and, furthermore, the users mostly moderate themselves. The only thing left for the administration to do is make sure the site is running smoothly — keep the servers going, uphold the law, respond to feedback, and plan for growth. It's not easy, but it's sure as hell straightforward. Instead, they've managed to create problems where there were none, while failing to perform their most basic duties. It makes users feel like they're not respected and, as a result, we're in the midst of another reddit exodus.

Which leads us to...

New Members

There are so many of you. Welcome to Snapzu!

What you will come to realize is that Snapzu is not reddit. It also doesn't seek to become reddit. Snapzu is a community that takes care of itself, where each member has not only a username but a face and a voice. We're kind to each other, and we're excited to be here. We believe that it's our responsibility to embody the type of community we want, and we hope you'll join us in doing so.

Some advice:

  • Make sure to check the FAQ, privacy policy, and terms of use if you haven't already.
  • The site can be a bit confusing at first. Don't be afraid to ask questions, as pretty much everyone will be glad to assist you. You can PM users by following them first.
  • Creating or claiming a tribe is lots of fun! It's also lots of hard work, so make sure you're up to the task. There's a FAQ and here are some tips!
  • The downvote is not for disagreeing. You can spite differing opinions by not upvoting them. Better yet, talk it out.
  • Leveling and reputation make Snapzu a lot more fun than reddit, but focus on making contributions to the community and you'll have an even better time. You'll find that we really appreciate the effort that goes into a quality post.

Your Weekend Plans

Rejoice! It's here again. What are you all doing this weekend?

I'm new, yay! I actually found this place from a Reddit post from the recent drama, and the fact it differed so greatly from Reddit is the reason I was so compelled to join. The layout feels really clean and smooth, I can't wait to visit here more often.

Ohmigosh, I want to say one thing about my day before I talk about my weekend plans. Today I went to the doctors and they asked me some questions to make sure my information was up to date. One thing they asked was if I was still a student. Well, I actually graduated a couple of weeks ago with an Associate's degree so man, it felt so weird when that was asked. Like, no, I'm just unemployed now, woop woop.

My weekend plan's so exciting, for some reason my family will be having a big party on the 3rd instead of the 4th. We're Russian, whatever - a party's a party. I'm pretty excited - we'll be eating delicious shashlik and hopefully my boyfriend and I will show my little sister how to play Settlers of Catan. And then I'm going to be very nervous the until I get back to my boyfriend's apartment because I have a bunch of potted plants there and it's been pretty hot here in Washington, so I'm worried they'll get parched and droopy because they wouldn't be getting water while we're away for the weekend.

Oh man, I am so excited. It's 4:40 AM, I really ought to sleep. I dunno if I'll sleep, I'm pretty excited! I've been binging on Parks and Recreation recently, just finished season 2, and I think Ms. Knope's cheery personality is rubbing off on me. Which is good! I need that more.

Oh, and I also bought Lord of the Flies on my smartphone, so I'm hoping to settle down and read that sometime soon! It sounds horrifyingly awesome.

Hope everyone has an awesome weekend!

I love your enthusiasm! Are you sure you're not on drugs?

I spent quite some time living in Washington. High five! Wait, depends on which Washington you mean.

My best friend was Russian! Yeah! Now we don't talk.

Give your plants a drip feed!

Parks and Rec! I'm more of a Ron Swanson.

      • eggpl4nt
        +1

Nope, not on drugs! Except for medically prescribed ear drops! *checks side-effects*
        Greater Seattle Area, Washington state!
Sad you don't talk to your best friend now. :( I had the same thing happen with my friends too - fell out after high school graduation.
Drip feed - oh that's a good idea! Like a water bottle or something.
I like Ron Swanson too! He's so great. I like the bond with April and Ron, it's nice to see. I think I like all the characters. I feel bad for Jerry a lot. :( I actually disdained Chris Pratt before watching Parks & Rec, I had only seen him in Guardians of the Galaxy before, but now I like him much more. Such a good show!

Congratulations. I still use my student card to get discounts in various places, even though I graduated about 2-3 years back now (the guys doing the check rarely know where to look). It feels weird when I think about it, I still feel really young at heart, even though just saying my age makes me feel super old.

I like your profile picture - it's so cute!
I never got an ID card from this college, funny enough. Even though it's free! I had an older one from a community college that I went to for a different Associate's degree, so I just kept using that for any school-discount-related-stuff. Usually printing at Kinko's. :P

        • bogdan
          +1

Thank you! Yours is pretty cute too. And you seem like a nice chill dude.

I guess it's expected that our colleges would be different, given that we're on different sides of the planet too. I'm assuming you're from the US.

          • eggpl4nt
            +1

I am sometimes chill! And I'm in the USA!

Also, would you happen to know if there's a way to get notifications when someone responds to a comment or discussion I made? I was getting them last night, but this morning I haven't gotten any notifications for any of the posts in this conversation thread or any other posts all day. Wonder if I toggled something accidentally.

Parks and Rec was a phenomenal show! I've been watching it lately, too, but I'm a bit farther along, a few episodes into season 7. You're in for a treat, the way the characters develop over the course of that show is great!

      • eggpl4nt

That's good to hear! :) Such a cliffhanger right now - this season 2 ending. Can't wait to get started on season 3.

Hello. There are a lot of new users out there, and I'd like this to be the main thing I have to say to them: This site is not reddit, and it will not be reddit. As much as people want it to resemble reddit, it is, and it will be its own thing. Try to learn its ways and adjust to it, not the other way around.

I am going to travel to the mountainside this Saturday, going to enjoy some cold weather in this mind-numbing heat. I'm currently on holiday, but I'll be starting work again on Monday, something I'm not particularly thrilled about, but oh well.

I am thinking of doing some reading today. For everyone interested, /t/books has this sort of monthly book-group-reading thing where we choose something and we read it until the end of the month, and afterwards we share impressions about the book that we have read together. I'm sure /u/gladsdotter can offer more details on this, if needed.

Thank you and have a great day!

That would be the book club I linked to at the bottom. But yes, that's right, and I suppose more descriptive :P

Thanks. Here's some pictures of where I'm going in case you won't be hearing from me again.

It's a few hours away from me, but I still feel like it's gonna be a long trip because of this road.

          Yeah, that's definitely a road.

It looks very scenic. Try to keep your arms away from dislodged boulders.

Is there any kind of equivalent for great audiobooks? My commute makes it tough for regular reading these days.

Just looking for a new apartment with my buddy. Weather is supposed to be wonderful, so probably going to be going out on the town a lot as well! Shaping up to be a good weekend.

it's a big weekend this weekend for me. i've been visiting my dad and sister for the past 2 months, and on sunday we'll be driving back down to where my boyfriend got a new apartment and i'll get to be with him again. i'm really excited. :)

also had a really great day this week during canada day, hung out with my sister, dad, aunt, and grandparents at an art festival in the city and got a really really cute blue & white tie-dye cardigan...... thing. can't explain it, but it's about knee-length, sleeveless, and drapey. i can't stop wearing it.

I was a frequent visitor at reddit's getdisciplined community, creating daily task lists and sharing them with others. It is a wonderful and very supportive sub. The sub going dark today, though, prompted me to look for a more advanced productivity tool. So, I've created an account at HabitRPG and going to spend time there, organizing and trying it out.

This weekend is dedicated to being productive, doing things, cleaning etc. As a reward, at the end of the weekend I'm going to an open-air concert with family and friends.

I'm taking my husband out for dinner tonight (sounds posh in actual fact just a little noodle place down the road) in celebration of him getting a 1st in his degree (super proud). Tomorrow I'm off to a Northern Soul night in Manc for a dance about. Sunday - massive roast lunch. Suffice to say, this weekend will be amazing.

Hmm this weekend? Archery Saturday morning, and if I don't freeze I'll have the rest of the day to myself - should be relaxing! Sunday sister and her small human are coming over.

    Hi everyone, I'm new too!

My city's weather has been incredibly hot the last few days, so I may go to the swimming pool to refresh a bit. I have already wrote to a couple friends and it seems like they are going to join me, so I'm pretty excited.

I also plan on visiting Milan with a friend of mine, as the Summer Sales are starting tomorrow. I have never been there during this kind of week, so I hope to snag up a few shirts and shorts for a good price.

    Have a good time, everyone!

Hello, new user here and trying not to be the lurker that I usually am!

I am on call (work in a hospital) on July 4th so my plans that day are to stay at home and clear out the backlog of things I've been meaning to watch on Netflix. In the queue are Burke & Hare, Russian Ark, Advantageous, The Secret of Kells and Thale. I also have this whole season of Game of Thrones to catch up on.

Today, though, is first Friday and this is the night that the Arizona Science Center has Adult's Night Out. It's free to get in and it's an 18 and over event which means you can play with all the cool things without having to deal with kids! Every month they have a lecture - this month it is "Growing Fish, shrimp and veggies in the desert. How aquaponics can feed the world!" That is the nerdy kind of thing that I find interesting. :)

Hi errrbody! I'm another refugee from the war torn nation state of Reddit! Thank you so much for welcoming us with such open arms!

As for my weekend, it's the weekend so I'm going to go out with my friends and do alcohol!

(The site is beautiful, by the way. It's so simple and clean I want to rub my face against it.)

So far this website is just purely...fantastic. I have nothing negative to say about Snapzu.

My weekend is going great! I am working on Saturday and then going to a nice lake for a pic-nic with my SO. It is not a full time job that I indulge in tomorrow, but a side-job. I dress in costumes and entertain kids at birthday parties. It is a fun job because I love to work with children, the only downside being that the temperature inside those costumes is ridiculous...probably close to the temperature of the Snapzu Servers!

Random question, but is anyone else getting a SSL Certificate warning icon for Reddit ? This has only just started to happen post-AMAgeddon

    • remez
      +2

"The site is using outdated security settings that might prevent future versions of Chrome from being able to safely access it" is the only thing resembling a warning I'm getting. The certificate itself looks fine.

      • Kysol
        +2

Yeah cert was fine when I checked. Maybe Google has finally rolled out it's SHA-1 banhammer warning to force people to start not using SHA-1 for certs

        • KempfCreative
          +1

Yea that is most likely it. Chrome was already behind their own schedule in warning about SSL, Firefox started putting it in the console months ago.

          • Kysol
            +2

I wondered about that because I'm on 43, yet they said they were going to black out the sky in 41

            • KempfCreative
              +1

Yea they talk a good game but until SSL Certificate issuers offer a clear plan to move away from SHA-1 and have as much zeal as the browser companies, it is going to be a long time moving to the next SSL.

        • remez

Interesting! I've somehow missed the news. Going to ask my boss about company's certificates... and check what my hosting provider uses, too. Thanks :)

Ahh this weekend will be glorious. Singing the Star Spangled Banner in front of a bunch of Ukrainians tomorrow, in celebration of USA's independence. No fireworks, sadly, but I'll be nice and tipsy topside. It will be either hilariously bad, or actually quite good.

I may be ignorant or just really out of the loop (grad school has me only vaguely aware of what's happening on my social networks), but this is really the first I heard of a lot of the reddit drama. Frankly though, I'm not surprised. So thanks for the update and useful links!

This weekend I'm working on some papers I have due next week. And then it's off to see the Foo Fighters in DC! I was afraid they were going to cancel the show when Grohl took that tumble off the stage a few weeks ago, but apparently the show is still on. So I guess we'll see how that goes.

My old college roommates are having a barbecue on Satuday, which should be fun since we don't get to see them that often. They've brewed two different beers for the shindig, and they always make either tasty or interesting beverages. Aside from that, there's probably a handful of things I need to do around the house, painting a room. But hopefully I can convince the wife to play some board games later on too.

Hola all! Happy to be a new member of this community as well. As for my weekend - going paddleboarding (anybody else walk on water??), drinking beers, and watching some fireworks.

Speaking of beers - any good beer tribes you guys recommend?

What am I doing this weekend? A bunch of college homework. I've got some history essays to start and a couple labs to do for data structures. Data structures are pretty easy, but the way he structures his labs require a lot of somewhat unneeded effort.

I'll probably also stick around here and help snapzu weather the influx of new users.

Today unfortunately is chores day... Lots of stuff to run around doing. I also take back our foster kittens today to get snipped & put up for adoption. We have a little brother & sister, they're pretty awesome, it'll be sad seeing them go. Tomorrow we drive down to my hometown about 4 hours away for 4th of July. They open up the small airport in town to people and do fireworks at around 9, and thats usually fun. Then on Sunday we come back and try to do nothing else for the day. Of course Sunday night I'll be watching BattleBots and posting on my new tribe /t/BattleBots, and I hope to see some of our new guys there too this week!

Also welcome to all of our new guys! Reddit is crumbling, and we're happy to have you here!
