A Field Guide to the True American Diner
The True American Diner is a casual sit-down restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner—all three meals—all day, often for all twenty-four hours of it. Time has no meaning in the presence of eggs, steak and hash browns. Portions are large but not obscene; sides are available with nearly everything.

Finally! Chain Restaurants Are Creating Lower Calorie Meals
As it becomes increasingly likely that the FDA will require restaurants to post the calorie content of their food, some chains seem to be taking preemptive steps to cut back: The number of calories in newly introduced menu items at large U.S. chain restaurants is on the decline, according to a new study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

The math behind McDonald's Monopoly sweepstakes shows the only properties that really matter
McDonald's kicked off its annual Monopoly sweepstakes this week, so of course we are thrilled to devour the stats. Lottery probabilities are a ton of fun, and Monopoly statistics are even more interesting, so a Monopoly-themed lottery may as well be Christmas for stat geeks. Here's how it works. Every time you purchase certain items at McDonald's over the next couple weeks — any one of 26 different menu items — you'll get to peel off a game piece comprised of two stamps.

Horsemeat sushi: For when you’re tired of spicy tuna and California rolls
Although “sushi” is often thought to mean raw fish, that’s not actually what the word means. The name actually refers to vinegared rice, and some varieties of sushi don’t contain any fish at all. Kappa maki, for example, are rolls of seaweed, rice, and cucumber, while inarizushi is made with rice and fried tofu. On the other end of the spectrum, if you’re in the mood for non-seafood sushi but also don’t want to go vegetarian, you can try horse sushi, like we recently did.

The McDonald's Cocaine Spoon Fiasco
In the 1970s, every McDonald’s coffee came with a special stirring spoon. It was a glorious, elegant utensil -- long, thin handle, tiny scooper on the end, each pridefully topped with the golden arches. It was a spoon specially designed to stir steaming brews, a spoon with no bad intentions.

Americans are tired of long restaurant menus
For years, long, windy menus were the fad. The more options a restaurant offered, the less likely that diners would want to go elsewhere, the thinking went. And the thinking was widespread: Everywhere from Ruby Tuesday to the Olive Garden and McDonald's obliged, channeling their inner Cheesecake Factory with menus that spanned several continents and cuisines, challenging even the sturdiest attention spans.

Richmond restaurant encourages bad Yelp reviews
Botto Bistro in Richmond is not very concerned about its Yelp rating. In fact, in an effort to undermine the reliability of its Yelp page, the five-year-old Italian restaurant is on a mission to be the worst-rated restaurant in the Bay Area. To achieve this end, Botto Bistro is encouraging all of its customers to leave one-star Yelp reviews; it is even offering deals for anyone who pens a crummy review: 25% off any pizza and a chance to win a cooking class. (Hat-tip to Richmond Standard.)

Hundred Bucks for 7 weeks of pasta? Only at Olive Garden
Olive Garden is about to try a pretty outlandish gimmick to lure folks in the door: pasta up the wazoo. They're not calling it that, of course. But on Monday, the casual dining chain whose business has seriously softened in recent years, will announce plans for its first-ever "Never Ending Pasta Pass" -- which, for $100, gives the holder the right to consume all of the pasta, salad, bread and Coca-Cola branded soft drinks that they can stuff down for seven weeks.

Why Don’t Restaurants Charge for Reservations?
If you want to dine at State Bird Provisions, you’ll have to get in line. The small restaurant, winner of the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant (2013) and a Michelin Star, only accepts a few reservations that are snapped up as soon as they are released -- at midnight, sixty days in advance. So nearly every day, people line up on Fillmore Street in San Francisco an hour or more before State Bird’s 5:30pm opening time to score a table.

Eater NY On The Road: Do Hickster Restaurants Exist?
A friend with long experience in every corner of the Catskills predicted the rise of hickster restaurants as the wave of the future. "What the hell is a hickster?" I inquired. "Well," he said with a knowing smirk, "a hickster is just a hipster who decides to become a hick, who finally gets driven out of the city by high rents and relocates to the countryside. And then he thinks about starting a restaurant."
