I find it fascinating that a process that is as well known as light-up firefly butts can still be "discovered" today. Science is nifty.

A great instructional video. I would personally put the tent higher up in the pack. The last thing I want to do is have to unpack a third of my bag without a tent set up, especially in the rain.

Wal-mart's prices would not be significantly affected by wage increases for their employees (source). Nor would there necessarily need to be an impact on stockholders (source)

For employers always face a trade-off between low-wage and higher-wage strategies — between, say, the traditional Walmart model of paying as little as possible and accepting high turnover and low morale, and the Costco model of higher pay and benefits leading to a more stable work force.

Anybody who has worked in retail knows this to be true. I am not a small business owner, but I imagine that they, too, can see the benefit of paying employees more and maintaining a more stable work force. Obviously, some big businesses operate on the same model. I am happy to see that government is beginning to see this as well. There is benefit beyond the bottom line.

Wow. It's really a shame that we aren't able to keep experienced and knowledgable teachers for as long as possible. That experience is invaluable. It's even more of a shame that they're leaving because of testing (which doesn't measure what it says it measures) and decreased benefits.

Unfortunately, there is a reason that many politicians, especially state politicians, don't support education. Most initiatives to support public education involve, you guessed it, tax increases. It is a public program that relies of public funding. Teachers won't get paid more until the general public thinks they deserve to get paid more.

I thought of the same thing as I read this article. Darmok is hands down my favorite episode of TNG! I routinely say, "Temba, his arms wide" to my husband when I'm handing him something. Even if Toki Pona wasn't the inspiration for the TNG episode, they certainly function on the same basic principles. Imagine a world in which language had no nuance - no one could get their feelings hurt because a stranger referred to them as "boy" instead of "man" (or vice versa). Although, I think it would complicate things a bit on the internet.

I like that this guide focuses on the utility of the recommended items. The only thing I would add is bandannas. I don't ever go out in the woods without at least two or three! You can use them as napkins or lay them down for a clean place to prepare food. You can use them to tie gear to your bag or wrap them around a walking stick to prevent blisters. You can use them as a head covering. You can soak them in water and drape them over your neck or wrists to stave off heat. In a pinch, they can double as bandages. Really, bandannas are a lightweight multipurpose tool!
