I've shopped across the border in the US Costco a few times, and once decided to pick up one of those whole roasted chickens with bread sticks, potato salad, etc. I was really surprised at the difference in size and taste from the ones we can buy here in Canada. The chicken was twice the size and it tasted very different, it almost felt like it was heavily modified as the damn thing looked like a turkey!
You can get good chicken here, but sometimes it's not easy. It's not just the size that they raise the chicken to be, it's the method of storing the meat. "Air chilled" chicken is more expensive, but tastes much better and the results of cooking with it are much better. I made baked wings with standard US chicken and then air chilled US chicken, the texture of the air chilled was amazing and had a crispier skin.
I do not eat a lot of chicken and when I do I try to buy an Amish chicken or from a local meat processor. You are right those chickens taste funny.
it's also quite easy to raise your own chickens!
I'm not too keen on killing them though...
Neither am I, but my wife can handle that part. She does the killing, I do the butchering. That's the deal.
Yeah it's a good idea to get those unprocessed Amish chickens! Will keep an eye out for those, or in the least talk to a friend that lives near those free range chicken farms to get me a few of those.
Still won't eat their food.
Yea no thanks.
Probably trying to cut costs.
