If you're having a tech problem, post in here and I'll reply with anything I can do to help

    Hello,

Unfortunately, the most recent post here was 6 months ago. Let's fix that.

I have been involved in technology my whole life. I built my first computer in 1992 and was on the web in 94. For the last 10 years, I've managed am IT firm in Pittsburgh, PA handling nearly everything. We do IT, networking, servers, video surveillance, Avaya VoIP, Asterisk VoIP, web design, programming, database, etc. You name it - we have someone here with major experience in it.

I never offered to give away this type of service for free on any other social media, but Snapzu is so fresh and I can't help but want to give back to the community here. So what are you waiting for? Ask your question!

    Fix snapzu login

    Hey,

I wasn't sure where to post this and I first submitted it to the lounge, but I'm going to try again here. When you login to Snapzu from more than one computer or device, you are logged out from the previously logged in device automatically. I think I know why.

The admins are storing a hash/key for our login session in a single location. Most likely right on our row in the Accounts/Users table. This isn't good because when you login from another computer, or a phone, it changes that hash. When it does that, the saved session on your other computer is instantly logged out.

I have an upstairs laptop I use to sit on my deck. A downstairs computer I use for when I'm inside working. A mobile phone for everywhere else. And it's AMAZINGLY annoying to have to sign in as I bounce from one to another (as I do all day.) I go back and forth between computer and phone 10 maybe 20 times a day. It makes Snapzu almost unusable for me.

The way to handle authenticated sessions is to store them in a Many to One table which links back to the Accounts/Username table. This way, each user can have multiple sign-ins stored without overwriting their previous session. Let me know if you have any questions with this. Thanks!

    Snapzu login

PSA: Your wireless isn't broken. Earth has been bombarded with CMEs this week.

In addition to IT & space weather, I'm active in the RC community (flying remote controlled helicopters, "drones" etc.) Most of our controls operate on 2Ghz spectrum and we check this stuff because it interferes so much with flying that it's not worth risking a crash. After receiving dozens of calls, I sent out a little blast email to try and cut down on new tickets. Here's what it said:

Have you been having Wifi problems this week? Earth is getting hit hard with CMEs. Some of the strongest and most consistent that I've seen since I started monitoring Space Weather events. I have had more calls about WiFi outages this week than I have in the last 10 years.

What are CMEs? CME stands for Coronal Mass Ejection, which is gas inside a magnetic field from the sun that's ejected into space. When a CME hits Earth, it creates the beautiful Northern Lights. But it also has wonky effects on all of our electronics, especially devices that use the 2GHz spectrum.

Fortunately, the solution is simple. Just power cycle your devices if you're having problems. Of course you can always give me a call as well!

For those of you who have lost your father

How do you cope on Father's day?

I don't usually get so worked up, but it's hitting me hard this year. Lost both male figures in my life about 8 years ago (my dad and his dad both went very close to each other.) Both way before their time (46 & 72.) Grandpa was fit and would easily still be alive but got diagnosed with end stage cancer since he never got checked for prostate all those years. Wouldn't have known it to look at him.

My dad designed and built robotics, spent most of his career contributing to technology to making a robotic human heart possible. Pap worked at Westinghouse as a foreman building nuclear submarines. I think I'm upset this year because the older I get the less I feel like I fill the shoes they left behind.

So if you've lost a father or grandfather and want to post about it here... Maybe it'll make things a little bit easier today.

Wouldn't it be great - since this isn't reddit - to pick a new name?

The term PC Master Race is a bit of a circle jerk in and of itself. "Master Race" has such awful connotations and I don't understand the desire to self-describe this way. I have been gaming on PC's since 1992.

This is a new site... new ideas... a fresh start. Can't we come up with a better name for ourselves?

    Edit: It's OK. I found /t/pcgaming :-)

    Hello from Pittsburgh

Just heard about this site last night. I love the UI here. And I'm not sure I understand the "follower" feature yet, but if I'm right, does that mean I can follow users as well? It's like the perfect cross between social media and a link aggregator.

Noticing that there wasn't yet a tribe for Pittsburgh, I decided to start one! Hope to see my fellow Pittsburghers there. :-)

One of my favorite astrophotos: The Sombrero Galaxy in Infrared

This floating ring is the size of a galaxy. In fact, it is part of the photogenic Sombrero Galaxy, one of the largest galaxies in the nearby Virgo Cluster of Galaxies.
