Thai's so absurd. The police are more dangerous than marijuana could ever be.

Commented in Most of the Drug Arrests in the US Involve a Gram or Less
We have it straight from the horse's mouth:
“You want to know what this was really all about?” he asked with the bluntness of a man who, after public disgrace and a stretch in federal prison, had little left to protect. “The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I’m saying? We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.”
As if it wasn't already obvious enough:
You start out in 1954 by saying, “Nigger, nigger, nigger.” By 1968 you can’t say “nigger”—that hurts you, backfires. So you say stuff like, uh, forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff, and you’re getting so abstract. Now, you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is, blacks get hurt worse than whites.… “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, uh, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “Nigger, nigger.”

Commented in 'It hits you very quickly': Canada brews first cannabis beer
Why do we seem to be busting up so many families these days? Hops and cannabis are "two genera in the family Cannabinaceae.." They look alike, albeit hops can be fifty times larger. Coming home with a bag of hops once, I stopped for gas. The attendant caught a glimpse and thought sure I was holding a bag of the unbelievable, unattainable home-grown. Weeds of a feather, and all the rest of that.

Commented in New Study Claims Marijuana Reduces Pain Tolerance Instead Of Relieving It
I'm not sure you can get a valid control because pain is subjective. The lower pain tolerance in marijuana smokers may be innate, the severity of the MVA injuries may be greater, and/or the smokers like the buzz of the higher levels of opioids.
It may be that long term use lowers pain tolerance, but I'm not sure this study goes any distance toward proving it.

Commented in Why is it so hard to charge motorists with murdering cyclists?
Judges are under immense pressure to save resources and jail cells for the worst repeat offenders,
Yeah, that’s why people get sent to jail for 10+ years for carrying some marijuana on them.
Riding a bike on a road, at least in the south, is almost suicidal. When I moved there I bought a bike and, within a week, I was almost hit by a car three times. People just don’t know how to react to a biker.

Commented in Senators introduce bill to end federal medical marijuana prohibition
With Attorney General Sessions looking to end medical marijuana protections and allow the DOJ to go after states that allow it, this bill is vastly needed, on the other hand I see a very hostile congress against it in order to attempt and give the DOJ what they want for the kids or national security I'm sure.

Commented in Study: Nationwide medical marijuana program would save more than $1B in tax money, lives too
The only thing I can add to your comment is that it's a similar situation with alcohol. It's sold legally, people start businesses to sell it, businesses pay tax towards government programs, and some people may abuse it. The only significant difference is the medicinal properties of marijuana that that have been proven over the years that have substantial beneficial effects. This leads me to believe that there is no reason to keep it illegal, and it should instead, be embraced. As for data, well there is a lot of data, marijuana has been used over decades, and whatever negative effects it has I'm sure those have already been documented.
