Commented in Netflix's New Gawker vs. Hulk Hogan Doc Has Us All Conflicted
I think you mean "right to privacy" and nobody violated Gawker's freedom of speech.
Freedom of speech is for individuals not to be arrested by the government for criticizing said government's institutions. A for profit publication can be sued in civil court by anyone (including the government) for anything (including privacy violations) and it does not violate anyone's constitutional right to free speech.
The rest is just internet muddying waters, screaming about free speech in any high profile case of he said she said.

Commented in Netflix's New Gawker vs. Hulk Hogan Doc Has Us All Conflicted
Shrug, dunno. Gawker gambled on freedom of speech outweighing consenting adults' freedom to privacy and lost. Whenever I read arguments about all this stuff it seems really convoluted. Hogan being a "washed-up racist" or Thiel being a "self-hating billionaire" doesn't seem to bear any relevance at the end of the day. However you view their characters, I imagine their privacy is no less rightful than anyone else's but I'm not versed in the US Constitution and stuff so maybe not. From an outsiders point of view I find the outrage all kind of meh.

Commented in Netflix's New Gawker vs. Hulk Hogan Doc Has Us All Conflicted
This case confused me because it seemed pretty cut and dry. Hogan had the right to be filmed doing whatever and for it not to be plastered on the internet, Thiel had the right to be gay and not outed on the internet but Gawker decided their right to privacy didn't matter because they believed their rights were more right. They were wrong and went bankrupt as a result. They rolled the dice and lost. It was their decisions that did the damage so I never really understood why everyone was up in arms about how hard done by they were.

Commented in It’s time to get rid of the Facebook “news feed,” because it’s not news
A buzzfeed report... lol... I just don't put much stock into them, they're about as useful to me as drudge or gawker.
All these articles about time to ditch the news feed are severely missing some points, though, the first and major one being originally it was news from people you actually knew or wanted to know, not companies. The second is pretty much the same as the first in that news, in this case, is the right word it just doesn't mean news like CNN, it means news like what is going on with Bob and Pam's lunch.

Commented in You Won’t Be Able to Sue The Next Gawker
Gawker is filing for bankruptcy. Peter Thiel, who is a Facebook board member and Donald Trump delegate, secretly sued Gawker in a proxy lawsuit and, even though the case is unresolved, it was enough to bleed and bankrupt the company.
Nowhere in law is there a rule that says I can't go down to the courthouse and offer my money to somebody involved in a lawsuit I agree with. Everybody is quick to say oh look how terrible this is, he funded the lawsuit that killed Gawker. So fucking what, Gawker outed him to the world when he told them not to, no wonder he wanted to fund a fucking lawsuit that could kill them, they ran a news story that could have killed him.
This is common humanity, you find something out on me, you want me to own it or you'll out me, I don't want to be outed so you take it upon yourself to tell everybody that will listen. You're damn right I'll sponsor anything and anyone coming for you.

Commented in Hulk Hogan jury adds $25.1 million to Gawker's liability in sex tape case
Good. Gawker's behavior is disgusting. The former editor's deposition, with its "jokes" about four year old children, revealed the ugly mindset behind the scenes. Gawker's a giant trash monster trying to squeeze into a tiny mask labeled 'journalism'. And the worst part is, some of the sites in the Gawker family are actually pretty decent -- io9 runs a good story from time to time. It's just their parent company is so goddamned horrid, reading one of their articles feels like I'm directly contributing to the national Kick Sleeping Kittens Foundation.

Commented in President Jimmy Carter Speaks Out: Calls The U.S. An Oligarchy
So I’m clear what you mean: The party that spent the Seventies and into the Eighties desperately trying to cover its debts with live telethons on NBC, losing money doing so, is why we live in a corrupt, authoritarian plutarchy today? That and President Carter‘s immense booksales? Oh, and the unspeakably invasive surveillance you suffered from when you tried a cursory Google search and clicked on the first thing you saw? Maybe not the same conclusion most folks would’ve come to.

Commented in Group of White People Toting Around Confederate Flags Will Be Prosecuted as a Street Gang
First, I think this is great. If the descriptions of what happened are accurate, this definitely is a gang.
Second, I posted with the the link to Slate's take on the story. They are both describing the same event, but while the Gawker story correctly says they are being charged as a gang, the Slate story just mentions the name of the law they are charged around and then uses the word terror and terroristic threats in the story and headline. Misleading and inaccurate in the name of generating page views. Not only a poor showing for Slate, this is also a good reminder to pay attention to what you read.

Commented in Shut up about Cecil the Lion, please
I'm always boggled by the argument that we shouldn't focus on this, because we should focus on that! As if talking about one issue somehow diminishes the awareness that can be raised towards other issues. I see the same behavior when video game companies release a new website or new skins or other cosmetic changes. People scream: "Why are you releasing new art when this bug still exists??" As if the art department has any impact at all on the programmers working to fix bugs.
The dichotomies that people force upon themselves are almost always troubling. My answer is always the same

Commented in The Secret Agents Who Protect Obama on the Internet
Can you imagine the amount of hate they have to sift through everyday. This is the worst opposition to a president I have seen. The far right has gotten ridiculous. Remember when someone shot the Congresswoman that was in the crosshairs of Palin's map?

Commented in Breaking News: Hulk Hogan Removed From Everything WWE Related
Well, I added the National Enquirer link that posts a transcript the alleged conversation. It's pretty damn condemning for him and I'm not sure he's going to recover. Although good news is this should give him more ammo against Gawker as it seems likely they're the leak.

Commented in The 'Gawker tax' is getting too high, Denton tells his staff
This is bad news. I love gawker for their honesty. Yeah they publish so bottomfeeding stories, but they find some gems in there. And they've never sugarcoated the truth. Looks like that might start to change.

Commented in Top Gawker editors resign following removal of controversial post
I'm only speculating but maybe it's important that the management sends a message, both to the public and their own staff, that this kind of reporting isn't something they tolerate. I thought the original incident was pretty shameful of Gawker in the first place so perhaps someone was trying to make amends?

Commented in Top Gawker editors resign following removal of controversial post
So they didn't leave because they are part of a terrible "news" site, but because the boss took down their terrible "article"? I'm undecided whether it should have been taken down, but what a shitty reason to leave. I hope Geithner sues the ever loving SHIT out of gawker. Him & Hogan will take them down (hoping Hogan will on his own though if Geithner doesn't join).
