In 1998 for English class, we were tasked with doing a project on the history of television. Naturally my first thought was look on the internet, then we'll load up Encarta (the Wikipedia of the time before Wikipedia). So, as there was no really great search engines yet it meant a lot of surfing to find relevant material. 'Lets try tv.com' I said, that seemed like an obvious answer. It wasn't. Not at all. It was a hardcore porn site and given that we were on school computers we crossed the window as fast as teenage boys looking at porn can close a window. It wasn't even 2 minutes later that the IT person was behind us asking why we were looking at porn.
I'm not sure how accurate my memory is of the events, but I am sure that it was tv.com that we went to. Similar to how whitehouse.com used to host porn. I can't remember what my point was, I'm sorry.

Not sure if you saw it but /u/gladsdotter replied with this.
The front page is filtered so that it doesn't show posts with no upvotes, thus sparing you from spam, unflagged pron, etc. (at the moment, snaps require three upvotes to be shown on the front page) The best way to see the brand-new stuff as it's posted is to use your Home feed. If you follow the tribes with the most posts--that's the ordering on this page--or at least the ones that most interest you, you'll probably have more activity on your feed that you can keep up with. Since most snaps in the niche tribes are also posted in one of the large tribes, visiting the snaps that interest you is a good way to locate other tribes you might not have known about. And the best way to get new content onto the front page is to upvote good snaps you see on your home page. Hope this helps!

I just discovered the Home feed about 2 minutes ago. There is so much to learn. Is it possible to disable the notifications of me posting things (in the notifications section. I'm not sure if there is another area yet)
This community is so friendly and the site is riddled with things that I am still discovering. One day I'll have the hang of it. Thanks for the help.

There is still so much to learn about this site, but the more I do learn the more I like what I see. Like this home button and status updates... didn't even know it was a thing, I thought the button to me to the snapzu frontpage. I think I might just start clicking random things.

I'm sorry but is there anything that isn't for-profit in the US? For-profit prisons are bad enough, but foster care? That is just.... I'm honestly speechless. Can anyone give me one reason as to why this is acceptable?
I tried to read the story but nope, that is just appalling.
Disclaimer: This is not anti-american, this is about being against for-profit systems where the lives of people, especially children, are put at risk all for the sake of revenue. I'm not sure if that needed to be stated, I hope not.

The singularity. Some people fear the machine uprising but I don't really. If it got to a point where I could transfer my conciousness to a machine I would effectively be immortal, I could launch myself into space and just hibernate. What if I hit something and am destroyed you ask, it's a good thing I sent myself out more than once. Of course then it becomes a question of when do I stop being me? That's a more philosophical thing in my opinion though.

Not really, given the vast size of the universe it's more probable that 'aliens' exist than don't. Also given the vast distances need to be travelled it's just as probable that our planet has already been visited in the distant past, as it would in the distant future. Therefore contact could really come at any moment in history.
Unless governments are keeping it secret... ya know.

I know someone who will internet stalk everyone, myself included. It's creepy as fuck, I've mentioned it being creepy but he doesn't understand he thinks it normal. The thing with this is that if he hadn't told me I wouldn't have known, therefore it's hard to gauge just how many people how similar behaviours. They don't value privacy or personal space and believe that if it's posted on the internet it's fair game. Which in some cases is true, just not to do with people's personal lives. Therefore I believe it should be an option for the individual for what happens with their comment history as some people are very wary of their privacy and others don't care so much.
Some options I think may be viable are: 1. Allowing only trusted users access to comment history more than X days old. This still doesn't help that much as you can never be sure of a persons intentions, however it's better than allowing everyone access. IMO. 2. After X days the users comments are thrown into a pool from the relevant tribe(s). This would mean that it would still give a rough idea of what the persons ideals and values are without revealing too much easily identifying information about the individual user, since it would be bundled with other users. 3. Straight up remove the ability to catalogue history. I have no reasoning I just wanted to get to 3.
Of course this is all under the assumption that it isn't up to the user themselves to be careful with what they put on the internet.
Sorry, I lost my train of thought and it turned to mess....

There's only so much not whistling a man can do. If I not whistled any harder I'd create a vacuum and destroy the planet.

I was under the impression that a court not long ago decided that the companies can only receive the amount that it would have lost had the offenders purchased the media legitimately. In Australia this is.
I can't remember where I read this but it was around the same time all this blew up.

I wonder if something similar happens inside the brain of a person on hallucinatory drugs. On a mild dose is the brain trying to find things that aren't there and is that why if you try to focus on one thing you can begin to see it. Or so I've heard.
