Running Injuries in Shoes and Barefoot

Judging from all the arguments about it, barefoot running seems to be (as Homer Simpson said about alcohol) the cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems. But does going barefoot really reduce your risk of injury?

    Do you run-commute to work?

I am considering commuting to work by running. I think it might kill 2 birds with one stone: getting my morning run in and getting to work.

Do any of you run to work as a way of commuting? How do you like it? What sort of benefits do you get from it? What things do you need to be aware of?

How do I use booster cables?

My parents have always told me to leave booster cables in my car in case I need it. But I never figured out how to use them. Last week my friend needed a boost, and we just couldn't figure it out.

I know I need to put positive to positive and negative to negative. But is there a specific order? What risks are involved? I always hear about electric shock but I don't know what exactly causes it; I think the fear of electric shock is what prevented me from helping me boost my friend's car.

Edit: As a follow up to /u/MePLUR, I'd like to add a bit more questions to this post.

Once the car with the dead battery has successfully started, how do I take the cables off? Does it matter what order? Do the cars need to be turned off before I take them off? Also do I need to keep it running with the cables attached to fully recharge, or does the battery get completely recharged right after it ignites?

Do you interact with other runners on your run?

When I run in the mornings, I usually come across the same pair of runners; two women jogging with a chihuahua. I always give a nod and say "mornin". Another evening, a runner waved at me and I waved back, that was definitely a nice feeling. It's nice when someone gives you recognition!

Do you guys see any runners on your runs? How do you interact with them? How do they interact with you?

What are some simple foods to cook for someone who just moved out?

This is not for me, but I want to post some questions in this tribe to help generate discussion; plus, I really think this can be a helpful post for anyone!

You can only make ramen, Kraft Dinner or Hot Pockets so much until you spend money on fast food/restaurants just to add variety. Cooking is a valuable skill for anyone to save money and to eat delicious food!

What are some simple, easy recipes that you would recommend to a student or someone who just moved out from there parents? What sort of foods should they be looking for at the grocery store? What should they stock up in their fridge? Any help and ideas for what to cook/buy is appreciated!

What was your first run like?

Do you remember your first run?

Everyone has ran in life; It may have been in gym class or trying to catch the bus. I'm not referring to this. I'm talking about your first run committed to running. The first run you decided that you want to be a runner. Do you remember what it was like? How was the experience? Fun? Exhausting? Demotivating?

I'd love to hear about your experience!

    The Beginner's Guide To Running

Running isn't usually love at first sight. If you want to become a runner, this is important to keep in mind. Running is more of a slow love that has to grow on you, but once you catch the running bug, it's hard to shake.

What should I look out for when buying a house?

I am planning to buy a house next year.

What do I need to look out for when buying a house? What should I keep in mind? I know I need to get a mortgage first with a bank or broker (I think), but what other things do I need to do?

    What is /t/HowToLife?

/t/HowToLife is a tribe where people can ask questions or share advice about the responsibilities of life. If there's something you think you should have known, but never figured out, this is the place to ask. You might think your question is stupid, but if your school failed to educate you or your parents never got around to it, you'll find your question is a perfect fit here.

I still don't get it. What kind of questions are allowed here?

I think this quote from Step Brothers is a perfect example of what kind of questions you can expect:

I wanna ask you to help me... to show me how I can be a grown-up. Do I carry my high-school diploma around? What do you do with your hair? What happens if there's inclement weather? Where do you- what do you wear? Can you wash clothes in the dishwasher?

I think I understand. What kind of questions are better asked somewhere else?

Any question that requires a high level of expertise in a subject or is purely focused on getting one persons idea or opinion is much better suited for a different tribe.

Examples of discouraged questions along with suggestions for a relevant tribe:

    • "What do you think of Bernie Sanders?" - better posted to /t/politics
    • "How hard is it to install a tankless hot water heater?" - better posted to /t/homeimprovement
    • "What recipes can I cook with tilapia?" - better posted to /t/cooking or /t/recipes

I already have life figured out. Do I have a place here?

Of course! Remember that every question needs an answer. If you feel you have a wealth of knowledge in a particular subject, please feel free to share your expertise in a post. When sharing your advice, be sure to add [Advice] to the beginning of your post.

If you are still confused about how /t/HowToLife works, please ask below!
