The weedkiller in our food is killing us
On a recent Saturday afternoon, in an estuary near Tampa Bay, Florida, I watched airboats move up and down the river banks, spraying massive plumes of weedkiller on to the vegetation. The state of Florida was trying to control and kill off scores of plant species. Nearby, children were lying out in the sun, though they knew better than to swim in the water, which has recently been blooming with toxic algae. Mists of weedkiller drifted downwind toward them.

Canada Passes A Bill That Bans The Captivity Of Dolphins And Whales
Cetaceans like dolphins and whales will no longer be kept in Canadian aquariums after the government passed a bill that prohibits their captivity. The bill, S-203, was first proposed in 2015, and it was finally passed after three years of intense legislative battles. With the bill in effect, Canada has taken another step towards becoming more environmentally responsible. The most uplifting thing about the bill is that there was support across the political parties.

China Preps for Launch of Historic Mission to Moon's Far Side on Friday
China is getting set to launch the first-ever surface mission to the moon's far side. The robotic Chang'e 4 mission is scheduled to launch atop a Long March 3B rocket on Friday (Dec. 7) at around 1:30 p.m. EST (1830 GMT; 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 8 local China time). If all goes according to plan, Chang'e 4's lander-rover duo will touch down within the moon's South Pole‐Aitken (SPA) basin after a 27-day flight, then study both the surface and subsurface of this region. Scientists detect biggest known black-hole collision
An international team of scientists have detected ripples in space and time, known as gravitational waves, from the biggest known black-hole collision that formed a new black hole about 80 times larger than the Sun – and from another three black-hole mergers. The Australian National University (ANU) is playing a lead role in Australia’s involvement with the gravitational wave discovery through a partnership in the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO), which is based in the United States.

US coal consumption drops to lowest level since 1979
Americans are consuming less coal in 2018 than at any time since Jimmy Carter’s presidency, a federal report said Tuesday, as cheap natural gas and other rival sources of energy frustrate the Trump administration’s pledges to revive the U.S. coal industry. A report by the U.S. Energy Information Administration projected Tuesday that 2018 would see the lowest U.S. coal consumption since 1979, as well as the second-greatest number on record of coal-fired power plants shutting down.

Why The World's Most Expensive Painting Has Gone Missing (HBO)
The UAE continues to push back the unveiling of the world’s most expensive painting. 'Salvator Mundi' by da Vinci was originally purchased for $450,312,500 by Saudi Arabia's Minister of Culture in 2017, but many art historians believe that it isn't actually an original da Vinci painting.
