28-year-old Haeli Wey pled guilty to two felony counts of having an improper relationship with a student this week though she will not have to register as a sex offender. Wey worked at Westlake High School in Austin, Texas. It was there as a math teacher she became involved with two male students. Both were 17 years old, the legal age of consent in Texas — which is predominantly why Wey will not have to register as a sex offender.

Texas loses patience, sues FDA for barring import of lethal injection drug
Texas officials filed a federal lawsuit against the Food and Drug Administration Tuesday following a 17-month stand-off with the agency over the legality of imported drugs the state intended to use for lethal injections. In July of 2015, Texas imported 1,000 vials of thiopental sodium, a barbiturate anesthetic that ensures rapid loss of consciousness when given in lethal cocktails. According to the court documents (PDF), the drugs came from an unnamed “foreign distributor." (However, Buzzfeed has reported they were from a questionable source in India.)

Texas abortion provider says fetal tissue burial rule is 'offensive'
The president of an abortion provider told a federal court on Tuesday a proposed Texas regulation requiring facilities to dispose of aborted fetal tissue through burial or cremation is unnecessary and "offensive." Women's health providers, which provide abortions, among other services, argue the rules are part of a nationwide agenda to place restrictions on abortions and make it harder for women to get the procedure. But officials in Texas have argued it would afford dignity to the tissue.

Texas put Planned Parenthood on notice Tuesday it plans to cut off Medicaid funds soon. It's a move that federal judges have blocked in other Republican-controlled states, which are now waiting to see if President-elect Donald Trump will strip the organization of taxpayer money. Planned Parenthood responded by vowing to ask a court to stop Texas from defunding clinics in January. Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana and Kansas are among the states where judges have denied similar efforts.

Pilot In Texas Hot Air Balloon Crash Killing 16 Had Taken Drug Cocktail Before Liftoff
The pilot of a hot air balloon that crashed near Austin in July had taken a cocktail of prohibited prescription drugs prior to liftoff before the aircraft struck power lines, killing him and 15 others, according to a published report on Friday. Citing government documents, Bloomberg reported that Alfred "Skip" Nichols had ingested the dangerous mix of drugs that included the opiate painkiller oxycodone. A highly addictive opioid chemical very similar to heroin, oxycodone is largely considered to represent ground zero of the opioid addiction crisis across North America.

Through the week ending November 26, Texas has had 257 reported cases of illness due to Zika virus. All the cases were associated with travel to an area where Zika is being spread. This count includes 16 pregnant women, two infants infected before birth, and two people who had sexual contact with travelers.

Officers injured, slain in what appear to be targeted shootings
Police are on high alert -- and in at least one city, mourning -- after four officers were shot Sunday in incidents around the country. Perhaps most startling to law enforcement is that in three of the shootings, it appears the alleged perpetrators specifically targeted police officers, according to authorities and local media reports.
