2015.06.24 Morning Coffee: New Members and Your Favorite Non-Existent Tribes

Morning Coffee is a user-created discussion series where Snapzu members can check in with each other in a relaxed environment.
We are experimenting with different formats and ideas, so feedback is very welcome!

How is everyone doing today? Anything interesting (or boring) to share?

We're continuing to welcome new members every day, particularly from reddit. Our welcoming committee has really stepped up its game, and incomers seem to be adjusting well — new faces are showing up all over Snapzu. Let's continue to keep an eye out for people and communities who would enjoy the Snapzu experience. Here's a tip: instead of inviting users to the main site, try inviting them to a particular tribe. Snapzu is all-encompassing, whereas tribes are focused on a single topic, and users are much more likely to join something they're passionate about.

Of course, this means we need to be developing our tribes to be vibrant communities. This leads me to today's question: What is your favorite non-existent tribe? What community do you really see yourself in, if only it existed?

A reminder that Book Club voting is open for July's nonfiction and fiction selections. Voting will be open through the last day of this month, after which the reading begins.

For those who haven't, check out new tribes or share your own over at /t/newtribes.

Are any of our new members PC gamers? There's a Steam group to play with other Snapzites!

I really want to try the book club for this summer, it'll be a first for me!

And a soapmaking/soap enthusiasts tribe. I just wanted to know how soap was made, really really liked it, and have been slightly obsessed ever since.

I'm not really in the position to make it (yet), but I'd sure love a place to talk about traditional soap best places to buy soap, novelty soaps, soap in general.

I know, it's so fucking random, but soap man, it's amazing.

Edit: I'm willing to locate to a tribe that has my interest in its umbrella like bodycare or something.

I just made a tribe yesterday even though I haven't had enough time to populate it.

I know how you feel i actually started a tribe a while ago /t/fixit and then completely forgot about it until this comment. I've just been too busy to populate it. That said any of you have any submission or whatnot i'll totally take them or try to answer them :-P

/t/homesteads? To be honest with you, I had to look up the term to know if soap would fit under it, and it definitely would! Consider your tribe expanded by one. :)

It definitely fits, but what I was getting at was that it's pretty easy to start your own tribe. /t/soap hasn't been made yet and if you are a soap enthusiast (I actually enjoy making and using fancy and different soaps too) you should start the tribe. At least claim it for yourself and you can worry about populating it later. I'd be happy for you to cross-post things between /t/soap and /t/homestead!

Oh. I guess by my own words I have to start it now. But the damn comes are messing with the dorms WiFi. I am typing this with a tablet touchscreen.

Sweet. I'd be down to learn how to make soap. Perhaps we can look into getting fat from unconventional sources, and then get some lye tattoos? I always thought it'd be cool to carry soap around in a briefcase as a soap salesman. We can start a club! But what would we call it?

Lye Tattoos!? Is this some sort of Fight Club Fad?

And since traditional soap was made from animal fat, I guess you could save up on bacon drippings?

And Lathernuts? Making a vague reference to soap nuts in the title, show we know some things!

WAIT NO NOT lathernuts, that is an awful idea in hindsight. But I do like the word lather...

IDK, if the tribe isn't made by Friday night, I'll start it up. I have enough links to start up some content.

Lol my whole comment was just a big Fight Club reference. The correct answer is obviously 'Fight Club', but ideally someone would have replied with something like 'Soap Club?' to make it funny.

          Anyway, go for it!

          Close call, bro.

So you're constantly breaking the first rule of Fight Club?

Make it already! You can grow it at your own pace and submit stuff you find relevant using the "snap it" bookmarklet function.

Ooh! I've never really participated in a book club before. The fantasy choices look great, but I might challenge myself to read the non-fiction too. How long do we have to read the books?

I've been wracking my brain, but I can't think of any tribes that I haven't already found here. Perhaps a film discussion tribe, so that people might chat about the newest films, and perhaps have a weekly viewing, somewhat like the Book Club.

Hey! We'll read the books until the 25th of July, and then discuss until the end of the month. I'm considering taking on both books, myself.

Yes, I've been thinking that exact thing! Maybe we should start something?

That would be cool! Would you like to start it, or shall I? Either way, the other could be a moderator.

Oh, I've just created /t/filmclub! If you join I can make you a moderator. We can start planning :)

The cool thing is that if there is a tribe that we think of and it's not made, we can make it.

I wish some tribes would be more active, though, specifically the dota2 tribe and the football (soccer) tribe.

But it's fine as it is either way, not looking to force what is bound to take its natural course.

Can't wait to read the book and share opinions with other people!

Word. And, like I said, it's worth making an effort to build up certain tribes instead of the site as a whole.

Also, if you happen to find that a tribe already exists, albeit with very little content or activity, step your game up! Start discussions and submit links, get some life going in the tribe! It might encourage others to start submitting stuff as well.

Caution: this may have consequences. They twisted my arm until I took over /t/atheism since I post there so much.

If you have the time to pick it up it's good to have a tribe chief who is active and loves the tribe! With great power comes great responsibility.

With great power comes great responsibility.

Yeah, that's my problem. ;) I don't want the power. I'm playing caretaker until someone more responsible comes along but for the moment I seem the most invested in the tribe. I'm contemplating a strategy for promoting it without being obnoxious about it.

We could use a /t/outoftheloop tribe where people can ask/reply about current topics that they hear about but have no idea on all the main events and details. But then again I think we can just use the /t/asksnapzu tribe for now.

Doing good today. I've slowly getting comic done. no matter what happens I will be posting it to my site. I have decided that.

As far as non-exsistant tribes. I created /t/learnart. I need to populate it with stuff but haven't had time which was exactly my worries about running a tribe.

We're still waiting to see what you create :)

I've been wanting to improve my drawing skills, so I may stop by later. You can keep an eye out for members who might be interested in helping you run the tribe.

Two tribes I'd be very interested in would be one about crochet, and another about makeup. Both exist right now, but have a basically non-existent membership and even less activity. :(

Very cool. I made a new tribe for Unity 3D - a popular game and app development engine that I've been using for the last 6 years. I also took over the game development tribe as it was empty -- these are both things near and dear to my heart and I think I can keep them populated with regular content to keep interest up. I hope, anyway!

Fantastic! We need tribe chiefs who are passionate, not merely interested in ownership.

I made a Harry Potter tribe yesterday; was honestly surprised it didn't exist! What are some ways to get more people to participate in new tribes? :) Also, I just wanted to say, I have been here for one day and am really, really liking the community. Looking forward to watch it grow!

It's gotten a decent amount of activity already. It's a popular topic so it'll only keep growing as Snapzu does.

I think you've already done your promotional duties, so the best way is to bring it up in conversation when relevant!
