I noticed that my notifications now pop up when they happen, which I am really stoked about. I don't know if that's actually an update or just because I'm now on my work computer, but it's a feature I appreciate nonetheless!
Nah, the icon always lit up, but I only got the real-time pop-up for level-ups and such, not comments or replies or anything. It's probably just the computer; as @nickcobb mentioned, I haven't cleared my cache or anything.

I see now. I sometimes don't get the pop-up notification either :(
I've yet to figure out a rule for it. But I click my notification button every time it lights up so I was never really bothered by it.
