Heroes of the Storm: Why Blizzard's Action-Packed MOBA Is Far From Dead
Late in 2018 Blizzard Entertainment all but signed the death warrant of Heroes of the Storm, its MOBA that brings together beloved characters from the Warcraft, Diablo, StarCraft and Overwatch universes. In a blog post, the company announced that it was shifting development resources away from Heroes of the Storm to other projects and cancelling the game’s official esports programs - Heroes Global Championship and Heroes of the Dorm - altogether. The post promised that Blizzard would continue to support the game, but warned that “the cadence will change”. It didn’t take much for players to read between the lines: Heroes was on life support.

Activision Blizzard Reports Record Revenue as They Fuck Over 800 Employees
Activision Blizzard, a company of more than 9,000 employees who’ve built some of the world’s most popular games, is a few things. They are a company who bragged about having a “record year,” on an earnings call this afternoon, a quarter where only raking in $2.4 billion in revenue was considered a disappointment. They are a company who granted a $15 million signing bonus and a $900,000 salary to a high-ranking executive who joined last month. And they are a company who just laid off around 800 employees, or 8% (!!!) of its total workers.

Blizzard: No major game planned for 2019
Blizzard Entertainment has no “frontline release” planned for the 2019 fiscal year, the company announced today during its quarterly earnings call with investors, meaning there won’t be any new titles in the next 12 months — including a long hoped-for mainline entry into the Diablo franchise. “We expect materially lower financial performance this year,” said Activision Blizzard president Collister “Coddy” Johnson on the conference call, during which company brass discussed its 2018 fiscal year earnings. “2018 benefited from the release of World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth, whereas we are not planning a major frontline release for 2019.”
