I'm just a young whippersnapper, so my first memory of using the internet probably isn't the first time I actually used it. As far back as I can remember, though, I had asked my mother a question that she didn't know the answer to, so she giggled, "I dunno, let's Google it!" I'm not sure if we ever actually found the answer or not, but what's important is that she ran off without exiting out (I think to go check on the laundry, or stove or something), and I crawled into her retro, green rolly chair and began to explore the Wikipedia page she was on.
I used to work next to the server room which held a couple of modem banks. That's how 10 people in the company, mostly VP's and P's got on the internet to hire hookers. Yes we watched the network/internet usage back then.
That sound is pure nostalgia, it still brings back that awesome feeling of finally getting connected and getting to do whatever you wanted online. It's so much different now, people don't appreciate it as much as before.
I have vague memories of messing around with FTP sites, Gopher, Archie... I think we had a Juno account. This would have probably been in the early 90s.
1991. My ex had set everything up but had to go for a pee. He gave me my instructions. I pressed the right keys and made the connection. Whoopee! Then I had to yell for help...
Didn't go anywhere near it again for 15 years. My, how things were different in 2006.
For me it was back in 96, I was at the school library. The librarian let me jump on for 30 minutes to research a paper I was writing. I ended up on Yahoo for a bit and got hooked. Lets say I was at the library a LOT writing "papers" until my parents finally got the net in late 97.
when shown my new car phone and seeing each number had three letters, I asked why. Was informed to type text and the Internet. I said that's just stupid. It's got NO chance !!

Well, that certainly made me feel old.
Haha, don't feel bad. I'm pretty sure I'm just a lot younger than most people here. :)
Oh, I don't feel bad. I earned these white hairs.
Waiting, a lot of waiting. Yeah, that and IRC
When I started at university and got my first email account. Oh, how clueless I was.

I have a 56k modem upstairs. I should drag it out and see if still works. There has to be something out there to connect to.

Another mystery solved.
The only thing missing is the cursing!
And my wife picking up the phone during a download.
More cursing.

Probably the chatrooms back in the old AOL days with my friends. We'd use private chat to share homework answers.
