With all the growing hype surrounding VR (virtual reality), what are your honest opinions about it?

I can't wait until we have some decent hardware with some quality games and apps (the biggest problem right now is the lack of anything REALLY impressive). VR has been a long time in the making, and now (or next year) I feel that it will really take off in the mainstream market. Once that happens, we will see a dog fight of companies trying their best to compete with each other. It will be great time to be a consumer.

I find VR interesting but isolating and disorientating. However, my only experience has been with Google Cardboard, which is cool but likely not very representative of things to come, so I guess I shouldn't judge. I'm far more interested in AR (augmented reality). It seems more applicable to more situations, and thus more likely to be around a long time, and maybe more flexible in terms of doing VR things too.

I don't know as I've never tried it. But after all I've read about VR I think it will be more than just a fad like 3D and curved TVs as there is just way too much potential. It will probably be really expensive to get into it which will severely limit the market for the first few successful years.

I'm really disappointed in 3D. It has the potential to be much more than just a fad, but blind profit hungry movie studios tried to exploit every last penny of the technology until the public begs them to stop. I would have compared it to color (by opposition to black and white productions) : it doesn't affect the quality of the content, but it can add a lot to the experience if used wisely and not only for its own sake.

I think the expense will still have to come down before it becomes a household item. Personally I would try it in the beginning but would drop it after the shinny wore off. I think I would rather ride a roller coaster in real life than in VR.

Not exactly the same, but have you seen latest news on the 'physical web'? https://google.github.io/physical-web/ I think that will prove more user friendly and accessible to most people. I agree with @FivesandSevens that VR could be quite isolating, I work for a recruitment company who may consider using VR for interview scenarios... but it goes against our key selling point which is that you get a job through a personal service rather than sending a CV into the ether of job boards. I am really interested to see how well it does though so I hope they go for it!

The Matrix had it wrong when it said that the machines will enslave us. It will be us that enslaves us, and it will happen with VR and probably the first MMO that uses it!
