Gasoline in the US. Ever since Bush talked Congress into slashing the federal tax on gas consumption the price of gas has been a lot lower than it should be and they won't even think about raising it again. This is forcing states to raise taxes on gas to make up for the budgetary shortfall in their transportation maintenance budgets.
There's a reason why every industrialized nation (and many third world nations!) have better public transportation than the US. The US really focuses on having your own personal vehicle for transportation. There are a lot of places where if you didn't drive there they don't want to see you.
IMO ... Teachers. What teachers in this country make is simply gross. Men playing a game make millions, while those tasked with shaping and educating the future are paid just a bit better than minimum wage ... my bosses wife, who is a teacher, makes less than I do, and she has been teaching for almost 30 years .. :\ I have been here 6 months.
Electronics using modern fabrication processes. If you think about how much science, knowledge, and R&D it took to even get to the point where these things are even possible to produce it is pretty amazing. We have developed processes that can reliably make electronics that are on the size 14 nano meters and falling. It costs billions of dollars to get a fabrication plant setup. Today you can buy a full, albeit stripped down computer, the raspberry pi zero for $5.

We have intensely taxed gasoline in BC and it's terrible on the wallet, but good for the economy and transportation maintenance I guess.
