Indeed, Gabe Newell, Valve's CEO, once said, "Linux is the future of gaming." That didn't happen, but Valve didn't give up on Linux. Now, Valve is doubling down on Linux, by proposing changes to the Linux kernel to make it more gaming-friendly.

Feral Interactive is a studio that specialized in porting games for the Linux and Mac OS X platforms, and they have already launched a number of titles. The developers are now making an extra effort to make their games work better on AMD hardware.

The biggest change is that this patch brings the first part of a major rebalance to weapons. Any randomly generated melee or ranged weapons you have will be regenerated to a weapon of the same type and level (and keep their name), but will have different appearances and rebalanced stats. Valve has given up trying to imitate this feature on its upcoming line of SteamOS-powered Steam Machine consoles, though. In a Github bug report thread, a Valve engineer wrote this weekend that Linux's "suspend" function is "no longer supported" in current SteamOS builds. Asked why, the engineer responded that "given the state of hardware and software support throughout the graphics stack on Linux we didn't think we could make this reliable."
