I tend to agree with you as far as the changes regarding the show verse the book. I'm not a strict believer in "what is canon" vs. what isn't, I'm happy with having the two mediums doing different things - I love that the show provided faces to the characters in the books, but obviously books can provide so much more depth and detail than even an hour long TV series ever could. My allegiance to the book may be tested depending on how long, if ever, it takes for GRRM to write them.
