The lack of appreciation for Nobby here is appalling. And Fred, too! Shame on y'all.
I always felt giddy when Vetinari stepped in, as well.

I disagree; I think r/asoiaf has deteriorated severely. It's impossible to have an actual discussion over there nowadays; it's all memes (catchphrases, whatever) or people trying to out-do each other with ridiculous "theories".
I'd rather moderation took a heavier hand in that aspect; cut down on the same old tired posts in the vein of:
* "CLEGANE BOWL GET HYPE"
* "And moonboy for all I know!!"
* "Benjen=Daario=Euron!"
* "Get your tinfoils ready everyone, I just read Homer and I know where ASOIAF is going!"

A lot of people in the ASOIAF fandom seem to hang on to the "released from his NW vows" loophole, or whatever you want to call it. The thing I don't get is... why? It's just a vow. It's not magical. Words are wind. Characters in ASOIAF don't keep their vows all the time. Hell, Jon's already broken his vows -- with Ygritte and with Mance and with Stannis. His vows never have been what would have kept him from assuming a greater role in the ongoings of Westeros.
GRRM keeps hammering in the concept that to err is human, and everybody is human. I don't understand the insistence on that particular point!

We (okay, I) can only hope for the combat mechanics of DkS2, with the level design and atmosphere of DkS1.
I've recently gotten back to DkS1 PVP at SL120, and it's woefully... monotone. You see very little variation in builds, and it all too quickly devolves into the "Backstab Dance" -- whereas in DkS2 I always need to have a look at my opponent's gear and movements, and think about how I should tackle him.
But then, I think about the journey itself, from the first bonfire and to the last -- and DkS1 was so much more memorable for me than DkS2. I love both games, but there's no denying that the problems that arose during DkS2's development and the sudden change of directors and design principles hurt the single player flow immensely.
DkS2 also suffered from some very shoddy texture work (maybe the designers were relying on the complete darkness element that got cut eventually?) -- so there's hoping that gets some attention.

A good call all around. The Discworld series is unique because it is a product of Terry's ridiculously wonderful imagination and opinions, and nobody else's. Any other author, no matter how good, can only detract from this wonderful universe which has become part of Terry himself.
