Commented in It’s Basically Just Immoral To Be Rich
Actually what we're talking about here is not being rich. Having a couple million dollars and a 6-figure household income is being rich. What we're talking about here is being obscenely, disproportionately wealthy to the point where you can control governments, brainwash the masses, have small armies at your disposal, and not give a crap about the consequences of any your actions because you have multiple places to hide if all goes to hell.
In a case like this the word "immoral" is too soft. I would maybe use "depraved". But these people are just a consequence of the society they live in. Ask people around you if they admire Bill Gates, or Michael Bloomberg, or Mark Zuckerberg, or any other billionaire of your choice. I'd bet most people will be telling you about how much they admire them and how awesome they are. We live in a society where greed is virtuous and compassion is scorned. Hell, these people even use "charity" as a means to avoid paying their fair share of taxes, and to get people to think they're philanthropists.

Commented in This 1956 guidebook for black travelers is an important reminder of America's racist past
My kneejerk reaction was to downvote your comment, but then I started thinking. My wife and I were talking about racial issues last night (disclaimer; I am a white American male of northern European ancestry). She had received in a facebook feed from a family member 11 Things White People Need To Realize About Race. I expressed frustration at the tone of the article with its implication that if white people were to change their attitudes then racism would be cured. In hindsight I realized that my emotional response to that article is similar to yours.
For me when I engage in the dialog around race I feel there is an expectation that white people need to take on the burden of guilt. I don't really know how to feel about this. I acknowledge the fact that I have been the beneficiary of better treatment because I am a white male, but I don't feel any particular guilt about it nor am I convinced that I should feel guilty about it. I don't even know if people are really expecting me to feel guilty about it and I'm just being hypersensitive. The atmosphere surrounding this issue is so toxic that I don't know if I'm capable of viewing it objectively. When I read about some of the more divisive issues like the Michael Brown shooting I'll admit that I get defensive. I don't know if that defensiveness in me is racist. Some would certainly say it is and they might be right.
I think the biggest problem preventing society from making real progress towards racial equality is that it's such a loaded issue. I don't see any way there can be an large scale open and transparent dialogue, at least not in the near future. Look at yourself; you gave us a frank assessment of your feelings about the issue and are being torn apart because of it. I think we all need the freedom to air our grievances, legitimate or not, before we can have a meaningful conversation about our experiences with race. And if we can't be truthful without fear then what's the point? You're not addressing racism, you're just suppressing it.
Now I don't agree with your sentiment. But I don't think you need therapy as some have suggested, and I think I understand where your frustration is coming from. My struggle is trying to resist my defensive reaction to racial issues and I think it's helping me see the issues with a little more clarity. Because it's impossible to open yourself up to the experience of others if you're constantly in a defensive posture.
If I get it all figured out I'll let you know.

Commented in Subjective Tastes & Character Judgments—Two Great Flavors that Taste Lousy Together
To be very clear: I’m not talking about subjective tastes that have a genuine moral component. I understand that there are moral issues with, for instance, food (eating meat or not?); consumer items (were they made by exploited laborers?); choice of transportation (does it pollute?); and lots of other examples. I’m also not talking about subjective choices that actually do immediately infringe on other people, like playing loud music at three in the morning and keeping the neighbors awake. And I’m not talking about making our own aesthetic judgments, and mouthing off about them. Of course we’re free to like or dislike any food, art, or entertainment that does or doesn’t strike our fancy—and we’re free to say so.
I’m not talking about any of that. I’m talking about making character judgments about other people, making assumptions about people’s lives, their values and relationships, even making moral judgments about them based on their tastes in music, food, art, entertainment, or other activities that are entirely subjective and consensual. I don’t get it. Why do people do this?
OK. Let's break it down. Partially it is because subjective tastes rarely don't have a "genuine moral component".
Professional athletics - exploitation of and health risk to participants (drug enhancers, brain damage, paralysis and death in case of motorsport). The entertainment value clearly pales in comparison to the risk it carries - indeed, it enhances the spectacle for some spectators because that entertainment value is measured in billions of dollars annually for sponsors, clubs and organizers.
Fashion - rarely do we see fashion which is not tainted with controversy of self image mental disorders, sweatshops, child labor, slave labor, animal rights while all it provides is purely aesthetic value vis-a-vis vanity. The items of clothing are never novel in any technological breakthrough sense. New lines do not differ from old lines because they supply superior fabrics which save on climate warming fuel in production or maintenance (e.g. don't need washing, mending). The production is of a disposable item which will be discarded once the thread is beyond repair and its replacement will be exactly the same except the color and cut (and perhaps a zipper instead of buttons - because those are sooo last year).
Entertainment - popular music and film are routinely abused to promote commercial and political agenda yet young people are the number one consumer demographic of these. Subgenres are about specifics: pop music is far less likely to be crypto-racist than country music but far more likely to be crypto-sexist and in any case - given the quantity of material produced and consumed - should we not consider genre as a predisposition to be bigoted in one way or another? I ask this as a fan of both Michael Jackson and Johnny Cash.

Commented in Green Beret Sniper Pens AWESOME Letter to ‘Crisco Sweating’ Michael Moore
I watched American Sniper on weekend with my wife. I didn't know the story of Chris Kyle and was guttered by the end of the movie. I have never heard quite like I did at end of the move, where every person in cinema was in stunned silence. Michael Moore is a coward, our troops deserve respect regardless of personal opinion on war!

Commented in Donald Trump is surprised his racist remarks received so much business backlash
Actualy, I'm of the opinion that business and politics go pretty well together, see Condoleeza Rice, Dick Chenney, Michael Bloomberg and so many others. What doesn't work for both business and popitics is a loud mouth plus coprolalia, those with the ridiculous comb over seems the defining characteristics of Donald Trump.

Commented in Brian Cox interview: ‘I’ve been making up for lost time’
He's extremely talented, happy to see him in more roles.
“I wanted to be a supporting actor. I watched the Hollywood demise of two very big actors whose careers depended on the opening weekend: Michael Keaton and Andy Garcia. They’re great actors, and have reinvented themselves brilliantly since, but being a star doesn’t always work out.”
He's right though, sometimes its just more fulfilling being a good character actor instead of being a lead and then having the movie universe collapse on you.

Commented in READY PLAYER ONE - Official Trailer 1 [HD]
When I first heard of this Spielberg movie I was excited thinking: "Another score by John Williams", but when I found out that Alan Silvestri is making the music (as much as I like Silvestri), my excitement turned into the same disappointment I felt when I learned that Michael Giacchino (another composer I like) was writing the music for Rogue One. Nobody, except for John Williams, writes memorable scores like he does.

Commented in Hong Kong bra protest after woman jailed for ‘breast assault’
Ng Lai-ying had previously told the court that she yelled "indecent assault" out of fear immediately after chief inspector Chan's hand landed on her left breast when he failed to grab the strap of her bag, the South China Morning Post reported.
But magistrate Michael Chan Pik- kiu said she "used her female identity to trump up the allegation that the officer had molested" her, calling that a malicious act and harming the officer's reputation, the Post reported earlier.
Weird. Judging by the quotes chosen, it doesn't look like anyone involved actually says she assaulted the police officer with her breast. Rather, the judge says she lied about being molested when the police officer accidentally touched her breast.
Feels like there's something missing in the article.

Commented in An ‘unarmed’ white teen was shot dead by police. His family asks: Where is the outrage?
It's foolish people like you that want to make yourselves look better, that are too narrow minded to see beyond trends and satisfying your own ego by patting yourself on the back; that give the ridiculous movements such as this steam.
Perfectly happy to be someone you can focus your hostility on. Realize, though, you're making a lot of assumptions based on nothing more than your boiling animosity.
You're racist because you don't care about equality, you only care for one races rights in a condition where every person's rights are being voilated.
Strange that racists so often want to show who the ‘real racists’ are. Here's one of your assumptions that's based on nothing but anger. Like when you delusionally made up up that somehow #onlyblacklivesmatter, now you're off on on how I, personally, only care about the rights of one race. Back this up, why don't you? Show some basis for this judgement. As if you even could.
But it's people like you that go out in the streets protesting and shouting from the rooftops " BLACK LIVES MATTER OMG YOU GUYS ", when the CRIMINAL Michael Brown who STRONG ARM ROBBED A STORE THEN ASSAULTED A COP gets shot.
Your issue isn't police brutality and corruption. It's this. It's not about cops, for you, it's about blacks as a criminal race. What bothers me about this isn’t so much the proud, willing ignorance, glaringly obvious in that comment, about the post-Antebellum criminal justice system in general and crime statistics in particular. No, it’s the fact that your prejudice about a race and your resentment for that race is what's clearly front and center for you.
I would overlook, too, that the cops’ word and official reports are good enough for you when certain people are the victims. I’d overlook that, for you, broad generalizations about races rather than individuals are all well and good, as well. It’s your incessant whining about how particular victims of police brutality are the problem that I find most repugnant.
He's no gentle giant, he's not innocent, and he's certainly no hero.
George Washington was a bloodthirsty killer, who rose to prominence hacking down injuns and Frenchmen from horseback. By the time of the Whiskey Rebellion, he set himself to work on cutting down American citizens. He’s a hero. Because he was prominent in a struggle, not because he was innocent.
The 12 year old child who was killed for POINTING A REALISTIC LOOKING FAKE GUN AT COPS, then everyone wants to say he never did anyone to anybody! He pointed a weapon at enough people for them to call the cops!!
Do you ever stop and think to yourself for a minute, “Maybe I’m crossing a line, here?”
Then idiots like you want to say it's because they are black, when it's their own stupid and criminal tendancies that cost them their lives, not their skin color.
Like, do you ever take a deep breath and, upon a long exhale and a look around, think to yourself you may’ve stopped talking about particular people and may’ve gone on to a much more ugly exposition on a particular kind of people.
Cops would murder anyone else under the same circumstances.
And we’re coming full circle. Now, all of a sudden, it’s not about race any more for you. Sure, when your blood was boiling, it’s black folks are criminal as a race, the statistics mean exactly what a surface-level reading would imply, and the civil rights struggle people have endured for generations is ridiculous an...

Commented in Impossible Foods CEO: we want to eliminate all meat from human diets
It’s probably better to be honest more often than not. Don’t do anything you wouldn’t want to read about on the front page of the New York Times the next day. And don’t lecture somebody about something they need unless you’re ready to replace it for them. Clearly the product pitch hasn’t gone over very well with that particular potential customer. It might’ve helped if the branding wasn’t along the lines of Paradox Phoodstuphs, but that’s neither not here nor not there.
Tell you one thing, you got a reaction. A strong one. So you know you were able to inspire action, and maybe combining genetically-engineered meat-producing yeasts with self-satire could be a recipe for a household name brand, but the consumer response situation has developed and not necessarily to your advantage. If you wanted to get in a fight with this not-in-a-million-years customer, perhaps as an unintended side-effect of ingesting somebody’s science project for too long, it seems to me like you could’ve gone after them smarter. That not-on-your-frickin-life customer doesn’t run some deforestation-themed resort Island of Dr Moreau, and isn’t the one looking to disrupt the global food industry.
If the whole reason Qonundrum Qomestibles is better than the other guys is because its genetically-engineered Black-Mirror–epsiode-premise is based on tinkering with single-celled life like yeast, and not animals, then own it. Say so. I mean, if you’re going to spaz out at the multitudes of people that’ll take your pitch as if it were a Michael Crichton setup, that is.
