Here's something that many Americans -- including some of the smartest and most educated among us -- don't know: The official unemployment rate, as reported by the U.S. Department of Labor, is extremely misleading.

That's kind of an old story; different outlets have been talking about the discrepancy between Unemployment Rates and Labor Participation rates since the beginning of the recession. It's not as bad as they'd like to imply, though: If you add discouraged workers, the unemployment rate only rises to 6.1%.
