But isn't the looming execution an added form of excruciating mental torture along with having to sit through about 12-14 years (average time) of death row with time to think about the crime committed?
That's 12-14 years of appeals, re-appeals, and additional court time taken up trying to "save his life". I think that skipping all of that drama and just go for a life sentence would be less complex in the long run, too.
Just to clarify, I am not a supporter of the death penalty. I was just pointing out that the death penalty is not a you're guilty, now you're dead process, its something a lot more drawn out because it has to be, otherwise there would be much more innocent people being put to death. Also, from what I read, the looming threat of getting the death penalty for murder is not as effective as people believe..
