Why The Heck Does Carbone's Caesar Salad Cost $21?
"It's hardly a salad," said Eater's Nick Solares when I asked him about the Caesar at Carbone, a Greenwich Village hotspot that tips its hat to the Italian-American chophouses of yesteryear, giant portions, tuxedoed waiters and all. "With all the egg, butter, and anchovies you might as well be eating a hamburger from a health perspective," Solares said. Just one thing: this salad is a heck of a lot more expensive than a proper hamburger. It costs $21.

And this is why I buy my own ingredients and cook the simple stuff at home folks... more of you should try it. A delicious Cesar salad with grilled chicken breast will set me back 5 bucks and 20 min of prep time, which is mostly spent waiting for the chacken to grill.
Also, obviously if I'm going to head out for a bite, I will definitely choose something that is a lot more labor intensive to get the best bang for my buck. Shell fish is messy and annoying to clean up, plus it stinks up the house during cooking. I will pay a premium to avoid the smell and mess that's left behind from shellfish.
