Why We Need a New Democratic Party

As a first step, I believe it necessary for the members and leadership of the Democratic National Committee to step down and be replaced by people who are determined to create a party that represents America – including all those who feel powerless and disenfranchised, and who have been left out of our politics and left behind in our economy. By Robert Reich.

A New Tack to Stave Off Alzheimer's Years before the First Symptom

The new mantra for researchers fighting Alzheimer’s disease is “go early,” before memory loss or other pathology appears. The rationale for this approach holds that by the time dementia sets in the disease may already be destroying brain cells, placing severe limits on treatment options. Some large clinical trials are now testing drugs intended to clear up the brain’s cellular detritus—the aggregations of amyloid and tau proteins that may ultimately destroy brain cells. So far this approach has had decidedly mixed results.

Researchers: Medical errors now third leading cause of death in United States

Nightmare stories of nurses giving potent drugs meant for one patient to another and surgeons removing the wrong body parts have dominated recent headlines about medical care. Lest you assume those cases are the exceptions, a new study by patient-safety researchers provides some context. Their analysis, published in the BMJ on Tuesday, shows that “medical errors” in hospitals and other health-care facilities are incredibly common and may now be the third-leading cause of death in the United States — claiming 251,000 lives every year, more than respiratory disease, accidents, stroke and Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer's disease could be treated with gene therapy, suggests animal study

Researchers have prevented the development of Alzheimer’s disease in mice by using a virus to deliver a specific gene into the brain. The early-stage findings, by scientists from Imperial College London, open avenues for potential new treatments for the disease. In the study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the team used a type of modified virus to deliver a gene to brain cells.

Commented in Venezuela’s death spiral is getting worse

Listen buddy, I'm no fan of the US government, check my comment history if you're not convinced. But what's going on in Venezuela is entirely self-inflicted. The Chavez period saw the largest oil revenue in the entire history of the country, and although some of the social programs created by Chavez were good, there was essentially zero investment in infrastructure and capacity building. Every time anyone started a successful enterprise they were either appropriated by the government or bullied out of the country.

It is ridiculous that Venezuela is now experiencing an energy crisis. They have the largest oil reserves in the world, but they need to invest in the oil industry and create opportunities for professionals in order to do anything with it. Instead, they've managed to get the people most prepared to do that to leave the country. It's even more ridiculous to have food shortages. This is not fucking Greenland, it's a tropical country. You drop a mango seed on the floor anywhere in Venezuela and next year you have a mango tree. It doesn't take that much effort, but you need to invest in it if you want it. Venezuela not only has oil, they have crazy mineral resources, the best cocoa and coffee in the world, magnificent beaches and tropical landscapes that could produce billions in tourist revenue. Why didn't the government invest in that?

I'm happy to blame the US government for a lot of things, but has nothing to do with it. It's the result of stupid policies. It happened with AD and COPEI, and Chavez was supposed to be the solution. Instead, they ended up doing much more of the same bullshit, and now they're exactly in the same place they were in 1989. Actually worse.

Don't come to me quoting Chavista propaganda and pretending that the blame is on somewhere else. Every time a government fails in Venezuela they blame the US. They need to take responsibility for what they've done if they want to get out of this cycle of misery.

Advocates push for the U.S. Postal Service to offer basic banking

Until the late 1960s, you could walk into a post office and deposit money in a savings account at the same time that you bought stamps or mailed packages. An outgrowth of the financial panic of 1907, the no-frills postal bank surged in popularity during the Great Depression. But as commercial banks expanded and offered higher interest rates, the United States Postal Savings System became as outdated as a black-and-white movie.

London ‘fellatio café’ will offer coffee & oral sex…if it’s not deemed illegal

London could soon host its first ever ‘fellatio café’ for punters seeking oral pleasure with their morning coffee. If the business manages to overcome all the legal barriers to opening, the café will offer customers a selection of coffees, along with oral sex performed by an escort. Founder Bradley Charvet said he plans to establish a branch of the coffee shop in Paddington, London. Charvet told the Evening Standard he is confident the business will go ahead.

The newest/most trending post here is over a week old. What can be done to bring Snapzu to life?

Place just seems pretty empty. What can be done to attract more people? Nowadays its pretty much posts in the larger subs and then an odd comment here and there. Kind of depressing to see what Snapzu has become, but I'm hoping that this place can really take off one day.
