The insurance business, for instance, depends on the fact that insurers charge customers more than their insurance is worth; that’s fair enough, since if they didn’t do that they wouldn’t be viable as businesses. What isn’t fair is the panoply of cynical techniques that many insurers use to avoid, as far as possible, paying out when the insured-against event happens. Just ask anyone who has had a property suffer a major mishap.

Selling insurance has become like selling bottled water. You're essentially throwing money for free at the company. But that's the most free and open system we've ever had! Don't you feel good being so free and open?

Do you mean the Royal Koch Emperors, disrespectful peasant?

Fun facts: this is all legal, because the guys who make the laws are the same who take the bribes. Also, electing the Democrats won't change it.

I can't remember the last time I watched a Hollywood movie. I have no incentive to get pirate copies of them, or to check any reviews, because statistically I can be more or less certain that any given movie sucks.

Well, that was my point. She didn't lose because she didn't go there. That's what the article claimed. What bothers me, or should I say, would bother me if I had some faith in human intelligence left, is that the Democratic Party and many of their followers seem completely blind to the absurdity of their own position. At least the Republicans stand for something.

That may also mean that Clinton didn’t lose the election because she was uniquely unpopular in key swing states. (She likely didn’t lose Wisconsin, for example, because she didn’t campaign there, as some have argued.)

OK, I need someone to walk me through this reasoning because I'm very confused. if you don't campaign somewhere, that means you didn't lose the election there? So, if I don't take the final exam, it means I didn't fail the class? I didn't really have high expectations for average human intelligence, but this makes me think I was greatly overestimating it. It seems President Trump was not just a probable outcome, it was a logical necessity.

Is the Democratic Party made entirely of brain-dead morons? At least the Republicans are reasonably smart in achieving their evil goals.

But then it's not a war! We need to kill people or put them in jail so they make money for the prison corps! We don't want to help them. That's not how you make America great!

    Very good read, thanks!

I believe that to survive the anthropocene we need two things to happen: (1) Religion must be eradicated, and (2) The human lifespan must be greatly extended. The second one I guess is much easier than the first.

The extent of speculative investment and the risk of losses to investors if the bubble bursts motivated the government to intervene in cryptocurrency trading.

... thereby massively increasing the odds that the bubble will burst. They must think people are stupid.

Wait, nevermind. People are stupid, and they know it.

The History Channel is to history as Music Television is to music.

They've figured there's a lot more idiots than reasonable people, so they can make more money by catering to them. Sort of how politics works.

I see all these people complaining that Trump is crazy, and I can't help but wonder if they've considered that Pence is probably much worse. I actually think that Trump may have chosen him as his running mate as an insurance.

I'm pretty sure a lot of Canadians buy the water bottles, so whose fault is it? Not trying to defend Nestlé, but if you buy the water, you're implicitly agreeing to whatever they're doing to produce it. It's not like their practices haven't been extensively reported.

Worst part is, you're most likely better off drinking tap water. Buying bottled water is literally throwing money at them for nothing.

The 16-year-old, who left her home in Pulsnitz, eastern Germany, last year to join the terror group, is desperate to return to Europe amid fears she could spend years in jail.

Awwww, poor girl. She just committed treason to her own country by joining an enemy army and killing or contributing to kill Europeans. They should definitely welcome her back!

Given that system, it would be more reasonable to invest your monthly health insurance payments and hope you don't get sick before they grow large enough to cover your healthcare. Which of course brings more money to the big corps and the government.

And, of course, if you don't have money to invest, tough shit. Poor people don't deserve to live according to our brand of capitalism.

Well, if car insurers can raise your premiums for having an accident, why can't they raise them for getting sick? Makes sense! After all, it's your fault for not staying healthy.

That was a bit infuriating to read, but not surprising.

I don't think that the current situation has a peaceful solution. The powers that be won't suddenly decide to peacefully give up all the unconstitutional powers they've given themselves, won't give up all the free money they get from the uber rich, and certainly won't turn wild neoliberal policies around. No matter how much door-knocking we do.
