Let's face it. The majority of people out there are pretty stupid and they don't want to read a bunch of words on a screen. They want their cat pics and celebrity gossip, and thanks to the popularity of tablets and smartphones, they can check out buzzfeed articles during commercials to their reality TV without even getting off the couch.

There will always be a market for intelligent discussion and in-depth investigative journalism. The site we're on right now is a great community that does just that. But the internet is becoming mainstream and that means that, just like cable TV, we'll have to sift through a whole lot of stupid to get to the good stuff.

Right, just because cat pics and celebrity gossip are more popular than the things that you and I like doesn't mean the internet is dead. If anything there is much more intelligent discussion and in-depth investigative journalism now than there was 10 years ago because the internet as a whole is so much larger. If the gossip and cats deleted and replaced the in depth stuff that would be another story, but in the mean time the internet is huge and there is room enough for everyone.

This reminds me of 'Brave New World'. I think the internet nowadays exemplifies the conflict of disorder, freedom and passion with order, totalitarianism and happiness/satiety/contentment. Sorry to any Huxley fans; I probably haven't phrased that well.

It seems that when everyone can be heard all the time we end up with a situation a bit like the witch-hunting mob at the beginning of 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail.' The majority of people apparently respond foremost to emotional impulses, hence the mind-crumbling influence of Fox News despite its well established lack of any credibility. Now the voice of social media is the loudest of all and public opinion is more important than ever. I'm all for freedom, but we should remember to see if potential witches weigh the same as a duck before drowning them.

The nice thing about the internet is that it's big enough to have all sorts of content. Blogs aren't really dead. They're in the same place they've always been. And, people who are interested in that will still look for that content.

Sure, other types of content are more popular. No doubt about it. But there will always be a need to have discussions with others. Blogs, sites like Snapzu, and others will still be there.

Here are some other snaps you may like...
