One of the most powerful Internet companies is officially for sale

Yahoo has admitted what everyone already knew — the company is up for sale. And to make sure it's taken seriously, Yahoo is bringing in outsiders to drum up interest. The company announced on Friday the formation of "a Strategic Review Committee of independent directors" to explore "strategic alternatives." Put more plainly, Yahoo has hired bankers and lawyers to field offers that can be presented to the company's board of directors.

Why Yahoo Couldn’t Adapt to the Smartphone Era

Soon after Marissa Mayer became the C.E.O. of Yahoo, in 2012, she looked up a list of the most popular activities that people did with their phones. Yahoo’s mobile business barely existed at the time, generating so little revenue that the company didn’t even report the amount in financial filings. When Mayer read the list, though, she was buoyed. Besides habits like talking and texting, which were services that cell-phone carriers...

Tumblr isn't doing as well as Yahoo expected

Yahoo had high hopes for Tumblr when it bought the blogging platform for $1.1 billion in 2013, but it hasn't lived up to its expectations. The troubled company has lowered its valuation to $760 million, down $230 million from its previous $990 million value (Yahoo only snapped up Tumblr for over a billion due to its liabilities). Marissa Mayer and her colleagues expected the startup to boost its userbase to a billion. While that did eventually happen over...

Yahoo sued over employee rankings, alleged anti-male discrimination

A new lawsuit (PDF) filed against flailing tech giant Yahoo claims that company managers governing the "Media Org" were biased against men. It also claims that the company's Quarterly Performance Review (QPR) process favored female employees and that the company engaged in mass layoffs without proper warnings. Gregory Anderson was editorial director of Yahoo's Autos, Homes, Shopping, Small Business, and Travel sections until he was terminated in 2014.

    Can Tumblr save Yahoo?

The short answer is, no, of course, nothing can save Yahoo. A year from now things will certainly look very different in Sunnyvale. The longer answer is, there’s a good media company here, with a lot of great assets and a real audience. That audience is both blessing and curse, since, while all those eyeballs bring in a lot of money, the fact that they’re there hasn’t forced Yahoo to adapt to the new digital media environment. The lack of urgency shows...

Yahoo to Reconsider Sale of Web Business Instead of Spinoff

Yahoo! Inc. is considering an outright sale of its business, marking what could hasten a significant shift in the company’s thinking as it faces pressure from activist shareholders. Just last month, Yahoo executives put forward a plan to spin off its main Internet business, the latest of several strategies they’ve proposed over the past year to deal with slowing revenue. Now, that idea may be abandoned in favor of a sale, people familiar with the matter said.

Yahoo is locking down Mail access for some people with ad blockers

Yahoo Mail is not looking kindly on some users of ad-blocking software. A thread on the forums for the service Adblock Plus, first spotted by Digiday, suggested some Yahoo Mail users were being prevented from accessing their email unless they disabled their ad blockers, and a Yahoo spokesperson confirmed to The Verge that the message is indeed part of a "test" for some users.

Today’s Season 6 finale of Community may have felt like a series finale, but it may not be over for the college comedy at its new home, Yahoo. Purple Reign - The unmaking of a Yahoo

When the great granddaddy of opinion journals, The New Republic, abruptly vanished in a sad, squalid burst of pixel dust and management theory last winter, establishment journalists rent their garments and gnashed their teeth in horror. “The promise of American life has been dealt a lamentable blow,” a group of former writers and editors associated with the magazine pronounced in a public statement. The New Republic, they said, formerly “a kind of public trust,”...
