‘This Is Not a Game’: Utah Man Sues for Right to Marry His Computer
Chris Sevier wants to marry his computer. "This is not a game, OK, this is not some kind of funny scenario," Sevier said. Sevier made his intentions known and went to Utah County Clerk Bryan Thompson to ask for a marriage license. "In this day and age nothing surprises me anymore," Thompson said. "I've been in this office long enough, I've seen lots of different things, but I just said, 'No, I legally cannot do that.'" Sevier named Thompson, Utah Governor Gary Herbert, and Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes in the case filed in district court last week.

Utah cat beating, torture prompts $40K reward offer for info
A reward offered in the search for suspects in the gruesome beating and torture of a pet cat in Utah now stands at more than $40,000. The Humane Society of Utah says an anonymous donor contributed $10,000. The 6-year-old cat named Sage belonged to a family from Clearfield, north of Salt Lake City. Sage went missing March 5, was found Wednesday and died Thursday.

Video Gaming Becomes a Scholarship Sport at University of Utah
The University of Utah will become the first big-time sports school to offer scholarships for competitive video gaming, so far the most high-profile entry into collegiate esports. Backed by the Salt Lake City school’s video game development program, Utah’s first varsity esports team will play Riot Games’ popular League of Legends and compete in Riot’s collegiate league. Judge strikes down Utah law banning undercover farm filming
A federal judge struck down Utah's so-called "ag gag" law Friday, ruling it violates free speech rights. "Utah undoubtedly has an interest in addressing perceived threats to the state agricultural industry, and as history shows, it has a variety of constitutionally permissible tools at its disposal to do so," U.S. District Judge Robert Shelby concluded in a 31-page ruling.

A Utah city has paid $50,000 to settle with a Subway worker who was wrongly accused of drugging a police officer's drink in a case that made national headlines, its attorney said Thursday. The out-of-court settlement came after police in Layton, Utah, cleared the then 18-year-old worker who was arrested when a police officer reported feeling impaired shortly after taking a sip of the lemonade in August 2016.

Woman charged with poisoning husband using eye drop solution
A man in Utah allegedly discovered his wife was poisoning him with eye drop solution after staying home from work to investigate potential causes of his illness, KSL reported. Dallen Tubbs allegedly discovered “numerous empty eye drop solution bottles with the tops pulled off them in a black, cloth bag with a zipper,” court documents state.

‘This is crazy,’ sobs Utah hospital nurse as cop roughs her up, arrests her for doing her job
By all accounts, the head nurse at the University of Utah Hospital’s burn unit was professional and restrained when she told a Salt Lake City police detective he wasn’t allowed to draw blood from a badly injured patient. The detective didn’t have a warrant, first off. And the patient wasn’t conscious, so he couldn’t give consent. Without that, the detective was barred from collecting blood samples — not just by hospital policy, but by basic constitutional law.

Utah hospital bars police from contact with nurses after ‘appalling’ arrest
The University of Utah Hospital, where a nurse was manhandled and arrested by police as she protected the legal rights of a patient, has imposed new restrictions on law enforcement, including barring officers from patient-care areas and from direct contact with nurses. Gordon Crabtree, interim chief executive of the hospital, said at a Monday news conference that he was “deeply troubled” by the arrest and manhandling of burn unit nurse Alex Wubbels on July 26.
