    Teen saved by heart transplant passes away on the first day of school

    As he prepared for his first day back to school -- even posing for a photo on his front porch -- there was no sign anything was wrong with 13-year-old Peyton West. But less than an hour later,  the 13-year-old passed away after being rushed to the hospital. WCPO reports that Peyton was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and needed three open-heart surgeries before his fifth birthday. His health took another turn in March, and he had to have a heart transplant.

    Brit ignored safety warnings to comfort dying boy in Barcelona terror attack because he reminded him of his own son

    Harry Athwal, 44, from Birmingham had been holidaying in Spain when the attackers drove down Las Ramblas at speed, killing 13 people and injuring more than 100. One of their victims was a young boy aged about seven but hero Athwal refused to let him die alone. The 44-year-old project manager was in Barcelona visiting his sister for a spontaneous trip to celebrate his own son Khye’s eighth birthday.

    British boy killed in Barcelona attack

    A seven-year-old boy with dual British-Australian nationality was killed in the Barcelona terror attack, Catalan police have confirmed. Julian Cadman's family had appealed for information after he apparently becoming separated from his mother. He is one of 13 people to have been killed when a van ploughed into crowds on Barcelona's Las Ramblas on Thursday.

    Mum 'cut in half' by lift after giving birth

    A mother has died after she was cut in half in a hospital lift - shortly after giving birth to her third daughter. Rocio Cortes Nunez was being transported on a stretcher to another floor of Our Lady of Valme Hospital in Seville, southern Spain, when she became trapped in the elevator. She had just given birth by C-section and was on her way to a maternity ward to recover and spend time with her newborn on Sunday, according to a report by El Correro.

    Authorities in Ocean City, Maryland, have concluded their investigation into the death of a Texas woman buried alive in the sand late in July — and they say the only person who knows all the facts of that night is the woman who died. “How the hole collapsed, she unfortunately is the only person that will know,” Ocean City Chief of Police Ross Buzzuro said at a news conference Thursday morning.

    Police: Body of Savanna Greywind found in river

    Authorities in Fargo, North Dakota, say they've found the body of a missing woman, who was eight months pregnant when she disappeared. Fargo Police Chief David Todd told a news conference the body of 22-year-old Savanna Greywind was found in a river Sunday evening. Todd says the body, which was wrapped in plastic, was first spotted by kayakers who notified authorities. At the same time, Todd says a farmstead was being searched.

    Pregnant woman commits suicide after being denied a cesarean section

    A Chinese woman who was 41 weeks pregnant committed suicide after her family refused to let her have a cesarean section birth, according to the South China Morning Post. The 26-year-old woman, identified only by the surname Ma, was admitted to the maternity ward of Yulin No. 1 Hospital in Shaanxi Province, Northern China, last Wednesday. According to China Business News, doctors who examined Ma told her that her unborn child had an unusually large head.

    Baby born to mom who declined cancer treatment dies

    The baby born two weeks ago to a mother who then died as a result of refusing brain cancer treatment so the child could live, has also died. Life Lynn, the sixth child of Carrie and Nick DeKlyen, died overnight, according to a post on Thursday morning on the couple’s Facebook page, Cure 4 Carrie.

    Police: Toddler shoots 2 other children at Michigan day care

    Police say a toddler accidentally shot and injured two other children at a home day care facility in suburban Detroit. Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad says a preliminary investigation has revealed the toddler “accessed a handgun and the weapon discharged” about 10:20 a.m. Wednesday. The wounded children both are believed to be 3 years old. They have been hospitalized in critical, but stable condition.

    Couple who survived Las Vegas shooting killed in car crash

    A California couple who survived the mass shooting in Las Vegas this month died just two weeks later in a car crash a half-mile from their home. Dennis and Lorraine Carver were killed when their vehicle crashed into a metal gate outside their community in Riverside County, California, on Oct. 16 and burst into flames, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The accident was so close to home that their youngest daughter heard the collision.

    Daycare Operator Kills Baby with Overdose of Benadryl

    A Connecticut woman who operated an unlicensed daycare out of her home has pleaded no contest to killing a 4-month-old boy by giving him an overdose of Benadryl. The Connecticut Post reports that Carol Cardillo entered the no-contest plea to second-degree manslaughter Monday in Bridgeport court, as jury selection was getting underway. The Fairfield woman faces up to five years in prison under a plea deal when she is sentenced Jan. 25.

    Parents say their 10-year-old daughter committed suicide over video of a fight with an alleged bully. Ashawnty Davis was only in fifth grade. At the end of October, she was involved in a fight at school. Her mother claims her daughter was confronting a bully. They say it was her first fight and it was recorded by another student and posted on an app called Musical.ly.

    Police rally aid for 9 children of woman who died of heroin overdose

    A Middletown, Ohio mother of nine died of a heroin overdose, and police want to give her young children a better Christmas. Police were called to a house on Yankee Road on Wednesday and found Jimeta Sanders, 31, unresponsive on the kitchen floor. Authorities said she was shooting heroin with her “supposed ‘friends,’ who then in turn left her to die in front of her nine kids.”
