About a year ago I introduced you to Shaye and Tom thanks to the people over at Living Big in a Tiny House. I love this story because this couple decided to ‘just go for it’ and take advantage of the benefits of tiny house living early in their life. They’re now enjoying more freedom and are building life on their own terms. Right now I’m here to give you an update on them since a lot has changed for them after living in their tiny house for one year.

Seven thousand miniature wooden houses are set to pop up across Melbourne throughout January this year celebrating the meaning of "home". Alek Lisefski was tired of paying rent in high-end towns like Santa Monica and Boulder so he decided to build his own house on wheels. He and his girlfriend Anjali Krystofiak moved in with her parents and put their rent money toward building Alek’s design. With no construction experience, it took Alek 6 months (while simultaneously working as a web designer) and $30,000 to complete the 240-square-foot home.

A San Antonio, Texas couple had build a 'tiny house' to commit themselves to 'green living' but the entire home ended up being stolen. Casey Friday says, "It was depressing, devastating, made me angry and shocked all at the same time." An advocate for so-called green living, Friday and his wife had invested 2 1/2 years and $35,000 into building a tiny home from the ground up.

Sometimes it pays to think small. A case in point is a bill recently introduced in the state Senate that would create a three-year “Tiny House Pilot Program” in which the state would award grants to build housing developments consisting of homes with an average of 300 square feet of floor space. The idea is that these Lilliputian homes would be an affordable way to shelter poor and homeless people in New Jersey.

So, we know that tiny homes can mean financial freedom and better relationships. But what if you live and work with your sweetie (and a dog) in 240-square foot home and a bucket that you poop in. It's still the case, at least according to Alek Lisefski and Anjali Krystofiak, who created their tiny house/home office on wheels when the couple moved from Iowa to Sebastopol, California where the median rent is a whopping $1,850 a month.

A young couple who could not afford a deposit for a house have turned a double decker bus into their first home. Daniel Bond and Stacey Drinkwater from Canterbury bought the bus for £3,000 and have spent £11,000 installing plumbing, a kitchen and a bedroom.
