The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it closed a four-month investigation of fires in the Tesla Model S this week, as Tesla Motors Inc. announced a design change to better shield the electric car’s batteries. Tesla said today it has started building the Model S with a titanium underbody shield to prevent battery fires like the two that occurred in the United States last year when Model S drivers struck road debris.

Brazil deploys troops to secure borders for World Cup
Brazil began deploying 30,000 troops on Saturday to patrol its borders and beef up security for the World Cup soccer tournament that will kick off in 12 Brazilian cities next month, the Defense Ministry said. The army, navy and air force troops will use river patrol boats, helicopters and planes to crack down on drug trafficking and other smuggling activities on Brazils 16,900-km (10,500-mile) frontier with 10 South American nations.

Denmark: Three Deaths from Drug-Resistant “Pig MRSA”

In a court proceeding, a microbiologist has disclosed that three residents of the country who had no known connection to farming died of MRSA infections caused by ST398, the livestock-associated strain of drug-resistant staph that first appeared among pig farmers in the Netherlands in 2004 and has since moved through Europe, Canada and the United States.

Audi 'lied' about safety testing
A BBC Watchdog investigation into Audi has discovered widespread lying about the safety testing of their vehicles. Undercover researchers witnessed nine out of 10 dealers from around the country falsely claim the Audi A5 was Euro NCAP safety tested. But the A5 - as well as the A7, A8 and R8 - are not tested. Audi's UK head office falsely claimed that the entire Audi range was Euro NCAP safety tested.

Qantas considers removing life rafts to save fuel
Qantas has not made a final decision on a plan to remove life rafts from some flights but insists no action will be taken that might compromise the safety of passengers. The airline is considering removing life rafts from Boeing 737s on some routes that do not take aircraft more than 400 nautical miles off the coast. The move would save about $1 million a year in fuel.
