Newmarket judge overturns 'racist' will
Even in death, you might not have the last word: especially if you’re a bigot. When Eric Spence died two years ago, with no family by the curmudgeon’s bedside, the Jamaican-born man left a last will and testament that disinherited the daughter he raised and left all his worldly belongings to the daughter he hadn’t seen in more than 30 years. “I specifically bequeath nothing to my daughter, Verolin Spence, as she has had no communication...

How Many White People Does It Take to Ruin a Good Joke?
I love making fun of white people. I do it every day. It garners laughs, which, as a humorist, is what I want most in this world. But as a black woman, there’s also another, more elemental reason for telling jokes at white people’s expense. The reason is not that I hate white people (some of my best friends are white!) but that this sort of racialized humor is an instrument that people of color can use to placate themselves in the face of the overwhelming reality...

Justice Department Finds Pattern of Police Bias and Excessive Force in Ferguson
Police officers in Ferguson, Mo., have routinely violated the constitutional rights of the city’s black residents, the Justice Department has concluded in a scathing report that accuses the officers of using excessive force and making unjustified traffic stops for years. The Justice Department, which opened its investigation after a white Ferguson police officer shot and killed a black teenager last summer, says the discrimination was fueled in part by racial stereotypes held by city officials.

Millennials are just about as racist as their parents
Racial slurs that have cropped up chants, e-mails and white boards on America's college campuses have some people worried about whether the nation's diverse and fawned-over millennial generation is not as racially tolerant as might be expected. The Christian Science Monitor went so far as to ask, "Are millennials racist?" Surely not all millennials are racist, but data can address a key related question: Are white millennials less racially prejudiced than past generations?

These Texas rebels say the American flag is more racist than the Confederate flag
When people tell the Texas Sons of Confederate Veterans spokesman Marshall Davis that his group’s flags are an enduring symbol of the South’s savage history of slavery, he has an answer ready for them. “The American flag flew over a slave nation for over 100 years,” Davis says. “The Confederate flag flew over a slave nation for four years. By comparison, the American flag is 25 times more a slave flag.”

The Skin I’m In: I’ve been interrogated by police more than 50 times—all because I’m black
The summer I was nine, my teenage cousin Sana came from England to visit my family in Oshawa. He was tall, handsome and obnoxious, the kind of guy who could palm a basketball like Michael Jordan. I was his shadow during his visit, totally in awe of his confidence—he was always saying something clever to knock me off balance.
