    Hey I'm Matt, I posted above - I'm also a gamer, both console and pc, and I've been interested in starting tabletop games for a while but don't seem to know where to start. What game would you suggest picking up for a complete newbie and where could I find a group of people to play with?

      Hey 

      This is a bit of a tough question for me. The reason being is that I haven’t had exposure to a large variety of systems. I have only played DnD, Pathfinders (Essentially DnD) and World of Darkness. These are all considered to be mechanic heavy and thus difficult for newcomers to learn as an initial system. It took me a while not to feel overwhelmed, I was just lucky to have experienced friends to compensate. As a result you should take my suggestion with a pinch of salt. That said, these would be my suggestions.

      - I would strongly recommend going and watching a webshow called Titansgrave. It’s a game run by Wil Wheaton and, in my opinion, he does a great job of showing what a successful tabletop rpg can look like using a simple system he had created for the show. I feel it would get you more comfortable with how these things function. I'm really enjoying this show. I would say start at ep 0 though. He explains the system there.

      - I would then suggest taking a look at Roll20.net . It’s an amazing site that I have recently started using that creates a great environment to play these games with others over the internet. It in fact has certain tools that I think makes it better than playing around the table. Their wiki and youtube should help you learn how it works. You can then use it to find a group to play with online.

      - /t/penandpaper is apparently looking to start helping set up some games using roll20 so maybe join the tribe there and ask some questions about when and how that is happening.

      - Finally I would suggest looking up and going to your local wizards/hobby store who sells these kinds of games. The often have, or have connections with, a community that runs regular games and they could probably help you get in touch with a group.

      Anyway, I hope this helps a little. Good luck, it’s an amazing hobby to get into and really does help with building friends groups. Some of my closest friends I met by randomly joining their group, not knowing involved.Most people in the hobby are happy to help others learn because it means the hobby grows with them.

            @Matime -

            Just thought I'd let you know. :) Also if you notice he does post the rules there for you to read. It is a very simple system to use. I have never played Dungeon World yet I will be in thr game. Maybe drop the guy a message and find out what his thoughts on an absolute new player joining are.
