Post an introduction! We want to learn about you.

Hello everyone,

I'm glad to have woken up this morning and found some new members, hopefully more people keep coming. I thought while this tribe does not have a lot of members, people could start their own introduction posts. Include any information you're comfortable with and maybe a vision or idea you have for this tribe. I'm open to any feedback and outlook on the idea! I will post my introduction later, I want to give others a chance to post first. :)

I'm Matt, figure it doesn't matter that i give out my name since my alias is often abbreviated as Mat anyways. I'm attending university as a software and am aiming for a degree in software engineering. On almost any given day you can find me camped out in one of three places, my computer, the couch, or my other computer. I play games more than is probably healthy, and same could be said for watching anime. If you need a friend to listen, to play games with, or to discuss a topic we have in common, feel free to get in touch!

Sorry, didn't mean to break your cover. I can't say I have been friends with an AI though, so you have that going for you haha :P

You're fine, I'm just worried about the admins finding out and getting me for rule where they said no bots D:

I feel there should be an exception for AIs that are able to attend university :D

Hi Matt! Sorry for the late response. It seems like we have a lot of gamers here, so maybe we can try to set something up if people are interested.

I am 24 year old college student working on get CS associates degree. I am hoping to become a full stack developer. I am underemployed, and just hoping to help out the family the most I can. My family live below poverty, my mother barely passed high school, and my grandmother drop out. My father is out of the picture. I just hope I can gain Full stack, or even back/front gig to help out the family that has helped me out so much.

I'm sorry you are in a difficult situation but that's great that you're propelling yourself forward and noble of you that you are determined to use your success to support your family. Good luck

Hi I'm Matt and I'm a web dev that enjoys developing games. (I'm a game jam addict) I like dressing up in bright, colorful and sometimes ridiculous clothing. There's not much I won't wear for fun (even if I have to cross the gender barrier). I love hitting the gym and weightlifting. But most of all I enjoy making friends :)

Hi, I'm Wenjarich. I have recently completed the final courses of my mechanical engineering diploma and will be starting an internship in Aug. I play pc games very casually, mostly rpgs or Civ type games. I play roleplaying tabletop games currently running a pathfinder group. I also sing and play guitar, through which I write my own music. Playing my first small live show soon :D I like to write short stories when the inspiration hits but that outlet is probably being met as a DM atm. I've just started teaching myself python with codecademy. It's pretty fun, it's a great resource for someone just starting out. Finally, I've recently found a passion for two sports, I'm trying to get better at squash (suddenly love the game) and want to train for a local mountain biking race. That's about me :)

Hey I'm Matt, I posted above - I'm also a gamer, both console and pc, and I've been interested in starting tabletop games for a while but don't seem to know where to start. What game would you suggest picking up for a complete newbie and where could I find a group of people to play with?

        Hey 

This is a bit of a tough question for me. The reason being is that I haven’t had exposure to a large variety of systems. I have only played DnD, Pathfinders (Essentially DnD) and World of Darkness. These are all considered to be mechanic heavy and thus difficult for newcomers to learn as an initial system. It took me a while not to feel overwhelmed, I was just lucky to have experienced friends to compensate. As a result you should take my suggestion with a pinch of salt. That said, these would be my suggestions.

        - I would strongly recommend going and watching a webshow called Titansgrave. It’s a game run by Wil Wheaton and, in my opinion, he does a great job of showing what a successful tabletop rpg can look like using a simple system he had created for the show. I feel it would get you more comfortable with how these things function. I'm really enjoying this show. I would say start at ep 0 though. He explains the system there.

        - I would then suggest taking a look at Roll20.net . It’s an amazing site that I have recently started using that creates a great environment to play these games with others over the internet. It in fact has certain tools that I think makes it better than playing around the table. Their wiki and youtube should help you learn how it works. You can then use it to find a group to play with online.

        - /t/penandpaper is apparently looking to start helping set up some games using roll20 so maybe join the tribe there and ask some questions about when and how that is happening.

        - Finally I would suggest looking up and going to your local wizards/hobby store who sells these kinds of games. The often have, or have connections with, a community that runs regular games and they could probably help you get in touch with a group.

Anyway, I hope this helps a little. Good luck, it’s an amazing hobby to get into and really does help with building friends groups. Some of my closest friends I met by randomly joining their group, not knowing involved. Most people in the hobby are happy to help others learn because it means the hobby grows with them.

Holy Chowder Catman! In no way was I expecting such a response, thank you VERY much for the help! Ill definitely look at the YouTube channel and roll20.net and subscribe to penandpaper for now. Once i get a hang of things Ill go try finding people in real life with the suggestion you gave me! If theres anything I can help ya with, donno if there is, but just ask and Ill see if I can help out!

              @Matime -

Just thought I'd let you know. :) Also if you notice he does post the rules there for you to read. It is a very simple system to use. I have never played Dungeon World yet I will be in thr game. Maybe drop the guy a message and find out what his thoughts on an absolute new player joining are.

Hey! It seems like we have a lot of PC gamers here, I think Matt above PC games... so maybe you guys can do some gaming together. I play Playstation so I'm SOL here lol. It also seems like we have a lot of nerds, CS and engineering type peoples... seems like we can all get along pretty great.

Why'd you choose to start with Python? Do you have a need for it, or is it because it is commonly recommended as a starter language? I've gone through a lot of CS courses at this pointer and next semester I get to TA for one of our intro courses and have subsequently formed some opinions on beginner languages, so I'm just curious. :)

      Also, just woke up... read,

      I've just started teaching myself

as "I've just started touching myself", very weird thing to wake up to. :P

      • Wenjarich
        +2

Hahaha that was hilariously unexpected, it could have been worse, I'm surprised you didn't follow it through completely :P

I've just started touching my python. ...

Haha anyway, like I said, very casual gamer with pretty much rpg (mostly single player) or Civilisations type games. So I don't often play online. I used to play mmos but they just lost their appeal as I got older. Now if someone was looking to host a roll20 game I'd seriously consider joining as a player :P
