Yea, circlejerk subs were always for parodying inane posts. I think it's the kind of thing that's harmless fun for some people. Although it is rep/xp farming I guess.
Also - hello snapzu, this is my first post. Lorra love to you all.
Well, upvotes don't REALLY matter, when I upvote something, it's not me "Gifting" someone something, I am just upvoting for visibility. Internet points are just pretty much just internet points.
Except here, upvotes and downvotes DO matter. If you click your profile picture, you'll see a reputation score. That score actually influences a lot of things, such as your experience gains, and if it gets low enough, whether or not you can post at all. Upvoting here is an integral part of the entire community's ecosystem.
You've gotta learn to laugh at yourself, you know?
Well, the problem was that it always ended up being about laughing at other people.
Granted, it was never the worst of the subreddits that did that by a long shot, and compared to the subs that were specifically dedicated to making fun of other users -- like r/conspiratard or r/iamverysmart or the "bad academics" subs -- it was pretty benign. But I still think that it wasn't the sort of thing we need here.
While I totally agree with you on the nature of /r/circlejerk, I'd rather Snapzu users found their own unique and creative way of replicating that function for the site. The more distinct from reddit this place is, the better.
I'd say its only positive if you have something real to circlejerk about. This community doesn't really have any really toxic elements to it (yet), so any circlejerk is bringing unneeded toxicity.
It certainly can, and it probably is somewhat inevitable as any social platform grows. The biggest problem I have with circle jerkery is that as it gets exponentially larger it starts to spill out all over the place. This can lead to people self censoring perfectly valid ideas for fear of getting piled upon by the weight of the most popular cliques. Internet culture has always seemed to have a Lord of the Flies thing going on.
